My wife and I have had 9 children, 7 of them born at home, and two at the midwifes house.  None of them ever needed medical care, but I am very willing to admit that we were blessed in this regard, and thankful that it would have been available if needed.

So only the strong survived.  We are becoming weaker creatures because of our medical care.  To add, our eyesight in most modern societies is getting worse because the people with bad eyes can still be part of the gene pool when in the past they could not hunt or work because they couldn't see well enough to do the tasks.

The cool (and scary) thing about natural selection though, is that it doesn't care much about the selection pressures, it enables the most capable organisms to thrive in their environment and evolve along with it.

Right now physical traits don't mean much in the human gene pool, the weakest dumbest people breed like rabbits.

Like it or not, modern technology and medicine is just a stepping stone in our evolutionary path, we've essentially evolved beyond the selection pressures that most other species in the world still adhere to.

With no form of birth control, women were either sterile, pregnant or dead.

There were periods of infertility based on diet too.

When a woman's body fat percentage drops below a certain point, she will just stop ovulating until there is more food available. Nice little safety switch really.

The real question is why they didn’t protest the critical lack of access to abortion services. Their Neanderthal bodies, their Neanderthal choice!

They likely went extinct solely because they couldn’t get abortions.

You don't need any of that to have a kid.  It's easy. Your wife will push it out. The baby will most likely survive.  The idea that a hospital is needed to birth shows just how incapable of critical thinking most people are.

Do you take your dog go the hospital to birth? Your cat?

It's sad how many women needlessly have C section births now days.  How many babies are fed formula when mom is perfectly capable of making milk.  How many baby boys are circumcised at birth just because.

We are truly lost. I have fun watching the sheeple who can't see the obvious.

During child birth now a days we have somewhat sterile rooms and equipment. We have technology to let us know if a woman needs a c-section.

How did the early humans do this? What were they using a rock to cut the umbilical cord? What if the mother wasn't able to produce milk after birth? These are burning questions!!!

APutting it bluntly, no woman ever said "Geez, it was so hard getting my kids's shoulders out", it's the noggin they complain about.  Once a kid's head is through, the rest of them just slides on out nice and easy.
View Quote

That part is false.  Shoulder dystocia is always a risk.  That's why you hear, "They had to break his collarbone to get him out" from time to time.

My second had a huge head but it was her shoulders that needed a little work to get unstuck.  Once the shoulders are through, THEN the rest of them just slides out.

Like all animals it's a numbers game. Only 2 out of 100 sea turtles live long enough to reproduce. Rabbits and mice have large litters every 30 days, because they are prey and so on. Man is no different, or wasn't until 100 so years ago.

Isn't that why they married them young in the old days? Like teenaged? They're more likely to have more kids, get them started early and crank out a bunch of kids, hopefully half will survive to help run the farm?

That's actually a feature, not a bug. A properly placed baby on the way out is head first, face to the mother's back.

On the way out they get some poop in their mouth to kick start their gut flora.

1) women died in childbirth
2) couples had many children like 5+ with the assumption that about half would not make it to adulthood.
3) natural selection was a real thing for the human population until about 100 years ago

There seems to be increasing evidence that a lot of that eyesight loss isn't as genetic as we once thought, but worsened by environmental factors. The oft-observed correlation between avid childhood readers and glasses is likely not coincidence.

People tend to think life was a lot harsher than it was to the people living it.  From our modern lens, we see what must have been horrific existences with nothing but miserable conditions.   But in reality, we evolved to live and thrive in that world, with those conditions.  We had extended families, tribes, communities, and were far more involved socially to make a living.  The purpose of life wasn’t to have a storage shed full of shit and die in a nursing home at 105.

After so many tens of thousands of generations before us, one would think most negative medical traits would have been selected out long ago.  Makes you wonder.

this is also a thing that most people on here and well, really everywhere, tend to ignore.  In the early days of humanity, your first kid was usually within A YEAR of your FIRST period.

That meant you had a whole bunch of 14 year old mothers

Most people don't realize just how young people where when they were doing this stuff, we put everything in our perspectives.

Back then 15 year olds were the Adults

Now 25 year olds are not even able to be Adults.

Way outside of my wheelhouse, but seems I read somewhere that the Neanderthals potentially were smarter, but also wired to be more individualistic. Humanity won out due to our communal nature. Fuck with one of us, you fucked with all of us.

As much as we talk about how "individualistic" western society is compared to "eastern" culture and such, you can't dismiss how we have still managed to form more and more complex societies over time, and collectively unleash ass whoopings when we decide it's called for.

Pre-anesthesia, pre-cleanliness and sterile conditions, pre-vaccinations, pre-pre-natal care, and pre-antibiotics-

There was a much different death rate.

Like 10-20,000  thousand maternal deaths per 100,000 pregnancies from time of pregnancy to time of birth or shortly after.
And that’s just pregnancy related.

Even 100 years ago or so, we had that down to under 1,000.
Now, it’s more like ten.
And would be even less is we didn’t have a bunch of skanky junkies and druggies and poors doing stupid shit.

Infant mortality used to be in the 100s per 1000 births.  Maybe as high as 300 or more.
One hundred years ago is was down around 100/1000.
In the US, it’s now around 5/1000.
And potentially, if the US had less skanky idiots,
Could be around 2/1000.

Prehistoric man, early Homo sapiens, early civilization man, etc. had a majority of births go without mother or baby death.

Does OP not realize that huge numbers of wild animals give birth every day without doctors, hospitals, sterile rooms, etc?

ETA: I mean, even a Biblical literalist who holds that the Earth is 6000 years old or so will have to have noted the complete omission of any mentions of ob-gyns, neonatal wards, pediatricians, etc. in Genesis......

It is in the Lewis and Clark journals that on their trip headed West they had some Indians traveling with them being porters/guides/etc.   One of the women was pregnant and very near labor and was dragging somewhat and fell behind the expedition.   Overnight she caught back up and in the morning they found her preparing food while breastfeeding her newborn.
