Let's say it's a life or death reason, like a kidnapping of a family member (one that you care for, not an ex-wife)
It's 2pm local time, on a Thursday, so the banks are still open
It must be in the form of US currency - literally cash in hand

The rules:
You must obtain the money legally
You can borrow from friends or family, with OR without the need to pay it back
You can sell whatever you own
You CANNOT touch retirement accounts like a 401K, IRA and the like

This. I could have a check in 5 minutes, cash is a little harder simply because smaller bank branches don't keep enough cash on hand to give it to one customer. I had to give them notice that I wanted $40,000 in cash. I was treated with suspicion, when in fact all we were doing was buying an airplane.

My branch is small also . I went in to withdraw $29,000 one morning and they had it by the end of the day but they couldn't do it that morning .

It seems your scenario is flawed. If it were a life or death scenario, the I am not putting retirement account 'off limits'.

I started the $500 due to a news article and then $5,000 because of discussion in my first thread. It was pointed out that many emergencies are over the $500 mark and $5,000 is likely a better gauge of how well an individual can handle an emergency.

The $50,000 thread another member started got frozen as a parody of my $5,000 thread.

I have some rental properties and we flip a house every once in a while with my brother so we have a large line of credit available from a bank. The rub is getting it in cash, i almost want to hazard a guess that it would be near impossible to do so. Even getting a few g's out you have to explain yourself.
