We wanted a small destination wedding but her parents and my parents wanted to invite a ton of people. Told them if they want a big party they would have to pay for most of it. They did. We had 300+ people at our wedding. We only paid 7k out of our pocket. |

Wife and I spent about $12k back in 2012. If you ask any of the attendees, our wedding was really awesome. Seriously one of the best times I've ever had and honestly I've never been to another wedding that held a candle to ours. Most of the money was spent on the reception hall/dinner and photographer.
DON'T SKIMP ON THE PHOTOGRAPHER! My wife's friend recently hired a friend "who is going to school for photography" and their wedding pictures are terrible. We had ~100 guests. ETA: Her parents paid for most of it, because she is an only child and they wanted to make sure it was a day to remember. I think we put in about $3k and my dad put in $2k. |

It helped that we got married during a recession, and we were willing to do this on a 6 month timetable (most couples do 12+ months) Most vendors were hurting, and they had all written off unbooked dates for the year. They were willing to deal. |

About $400 for clothes, travel, flowers and venue (Minister included). Her dad got the reception dinner and paid lodging for all of the guests, my sisters got the cake and photographer, we spent American Express points for the honeymoon.

Around $10k in '94. Most of that was for the country club reception for about 150 people. Wife made her dress. Wedding cake was by a lady with a good reputation that worked out of her house. I did go for pro photo's but selected the lower end package. Videos were by two different family members. Church wedding at my childhood church cost minimal $ for preist and organist.

I think ours was $20-25K for 150-200 people. I really didn't plan much. The main insistence from her parents was an open bar as anything else is tacky. I think that's where the bulk of the cost came from.

did ours for 10K about a decade ago.
Married in the church, ( hers) I think the priest/church got a $500 donation) flowers and the such just shopped smartly, local small florist. Dresses and Tuxs. I used men's wharehouse so it was easy for groomsmen, she went to and oldtime polish dresshop on chicago's south side. I forget where she went for bridesmades we kept it simple. we had the reception at an Italian ( mighta been polish) hall,catered from the same place had an open bar for a bit . Music was a local DJ guy who was recommended from her mom's friend from bingo. Again, all local, salt of the earth Chicago south side people. not the urban youtes you read about just old time polish and italians from the area. The guest list was smallish, maybe 125 people mostly her family. I had maybe 15 people, grandmas. siblings parents one uncle his wife and 3 old friends. Who really wants to go to a wedding anyway? I didn't invite the coworkers, or embarrassment friends that come and go in life, just 3 old ones. Keep it simple. plan local. don't throw a "party" per-se your guest will appreciate it if they were like ours. good central location, clothing and needs ect were taken into account. We did NOT do bachelor/bacherllotette bullshit. common, you are getting married, do you really want some skanks ass in your face the night before? What we DID do was go to a bigger entertainment bar with our bridal/groomsmen groups and a few family members the night before. together.

Maybe $250 total. We got married on very short (3 days) notice in my folks' back yard. I bought a new tie, my wife bought a new skirt, my dad rented some tables... that was it aside from the ring. I'm sure 1/2 the people who came figured my wife was pregnant already (she wasn't) and half were sure we'd be divorced within a few years (19 1/2 years and still together).
