About $25k in '99
Dinner was rainbow trout stuffed w Maryland crab meat... people still talk about that food. |
Not much.
2 hotel rooms on Jekyl Island for us and her sister. Courthouse for license. Paid lady and photographer to marry us on the beach. |
About $50. Whatever the license cost. It was 1 August. Got married in the afternoon. I went back to work after.
About $300 total. My wife bought a dress on clearance, held the wedding/reception at her family's church, no cost. No booze. About 100 guests. My wife did her own flowers and food. I wore my military uniform.
Been happily married 35 years now. By comparison, one of my wife's cousins (female) had a huge wedding that cost over $40,000, all the bells and whistles. She was divorced two years later. |
Made a small donation to the country church where we knew the pastor......invited parents and close friends....wife’s Uncle took a few pictures and that was it....that was 30 years ago and we’re still together. I dont recall the amount but I’m sure with the license and donation we were all in for less than $100.

Under a grand. Did it at one of the Knob Creek machine gun shoots. We spent more on ammo that weekend than on getting hitched. Priorities.
32k for 335 guests
We both have large families and are close with all of them |
We spent about $26k on a beach wedding in an exotic location. Most of that was the dress, rings, hotel, flights and food.
Less than $1K to get hitched, 23 year later it cost half a million to get unhitched.
$0
Never married, and frankly of you learn anything from GD — don’t get married! |
$0. At the county courthouse. We both agree its been one of the best decisions we ever made together. Spending money/going into debt for a one day party is clown shoes retarded. No family drama, wedding drama, planning drama.... PRICELESS.
A few thousand. Biggest money saver was having a cake/dessert reception after the ceremony for everybody and a smaller dinner reception for family and close friends.
About $5,000 including the rings. Courthouse with close family, dinner at a fancy restaurant and back to the house (that we put 30% down on) for drinks and dessert.
For the wedding $80 or so in administration fees.
The reception was about $500 but we had all-you-can eat shrimp and lobster and an open bar for four hours. |
About $5000. A little over 100 or 120 people showed up but we invited around 150. We could have handled 150 with basically no more expense as we planned on the big number from the start. We did the wedding and the reception at our local elks club. $150 to rent their pavilion for the day. They provided an outside bar for 5 hours and sold beer and liquor so the made their money...lol. We rented a 40x80 tent, the tables and chairs from taylor rental for about $2000. Had one of my father in laws friends who has a smoker and other food stuff do pork loins, chicken and three home made salads for another $1500. After other misc. stuff and $500 for the DJ we were like $5000 into the whole deal. It can be done if you know the right people and don't have to have an overly extravagant service. We wanted it to big like a big party for all of our friends and it worked out great.

I think we had about half the number you do OP. Got married in a Church and didn't go all out with decorations or flowers. I think that part ran us $500? I could be wrong, but it wasnt crazy. Reception was in a Hilton, the package came with the food (3 dinner options for the guests, steak, chicken, or veggie) 3 kegs of my choice, wine, tables, chairs, wedding planner, discounted rooms for the guests etc. We hired a DJ, added some custom lighting, and rented nice linens for the tables/ chairs. I think total we spent $7000.
The Hilton was a very last minute decision. The original venue we picked had new owners who wouldnt honor what the previous ones had in our contract, and we walked away from them maybe a month or two out from the wedding. Desperate to find someone with availability we stumbled across the local Hilton and they totally exceeded our expectations and were completely awesome to work with. |

< $1k in 1996.
Less than 40 guests, at my house, with excellent catered BBQ. My daughter wants her wedding the same way. |
Around 15k. Mother in law paid for it and tried to live vicariously through my wife. I told my wife to decline, but she didn't. So our planned wedding went from 25 close friends to 175 people, most of whom I'll never see again.
My first wedding cost me my house, my car and damn near everything else that I owned.
Mine cost less than the divorce. Why are divorces so expensive???????????? BECAUSE THEY ARE WORTH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
$56 + $10 for copies of the certificate. Courthouse, been happily married 11years this month.
$25k for 200 guests in 1994. Wife took care of everything. A bunch of this money was wasted, $2k on silk flowers!, 2 dresses, one for the ceremony and one for the reception, <rolleyes>.
The meal was really 2 meals; filet mignon AND some stuffed chicken thing, (since she didn’t know who would want what). The cake was several thousand dollars from a French bakery. It was amazing, white & raspberry cream layers, and a grooms cake that was even better, chocolate & chocolate mousse layers dipped in chocolate. Almost every decision was “Get Both”. It was a nice wedding. I found out afterward that her Dad offered to give her the $25k in cash. 23yrs later I still have to keep her on a tight budget or things spiral quickly, but I ain’t looking to trade her in. |
Don't have an exact dollar amount, but it was primarily air fair and the cost of our stay -- we did a destination wedding in Arizona. It was simple and stress free.
A handful of family members (4 from her side and 3 from mine) accompanied us there to see us do a simple ceremony on some scenic ground at the resort we were staying at. Tipped the JP a nice little stipend for his time after the fact and that was pretty much it. Oh, we all had dinner afterwards. |
Another cheapie here. In 1983 we dropped about $1000 on rings, dress, church/pastor, and reception. The bride and her mother hand folded all of the ribbon roses for the bouquets and decorations, my dad did the video recording (in glorious 1983 VHS), and cousins provided the singing. Cake and punch in the church hall for the reception. So far we have made it 34+ years, and I don't see it changing.
Our wedding was about $2500. Friends made the food. We went to her church for the ceremony. We rented a local civic center for the reception. We didn't supply booze. Used a cheaper photographer. I'm happy with it. My wife wasn't super happy with the pictures. Otherwise she was happy as well.
Less than 2k. We had about 50 guest at a smallish church. That was 14 years ago and counting. Spending big money on a wedding is foolish. Scale it back and use the money for house down payment, investments, or paying off debt.
Ours was around $2,000 in my parents back yard for 8 people total with the photographer (and the photos were almost half of the total cost). DO NOT SKIMP ON THE PHOTOS. They make our little small event look like we spent 10s of thousands of dollars. We then spent over $6,000 on the Honeymoon and were extremely happy with the decision.
I was in the wedding party for a friend who was old school New Orleans money, marrying a chick from another old school New Orleans money family. That one was around $400,000 for 300 people. The bride's dad wrote a check for the whole thing without blinking. Groom's Dad bought them a house in the garden district of New Orleans for a wedding present. All of the groomsmen got a Brooks Brother Suit for free. I believe it was about $43,000 for the open bar. |
Had a pretty small ceremony around 25 or so guests. Spent right around 10k on the wedding and reception, but it was a destination wedding in Hawaii so that factors in to the cost. If we had done the same thing locally, the cost would have been less than half of that.
$15k at a cabana club on the beach in south Florida with 115 guests, including airfare.
Lots of family help. Lobster roll and gourmet hot dog food trucks to feed everyone. Costco flowers. $3.5k for the venue. $2k for open bar (worth it). $1200 for a great DJ (worth it). Her dad built the altar. Aunts put together boquets/decorations. Moms cooked appetizers and snacks to go with dinner. My dad hosted the rehearsal dinner. Best wedding I've ever been to. |
I just got engaged so this is relevant to me.
Is it tacky to go to a restaurant after the ceremony and make the guests pay for there own food? |
First one was on the water on Kauai. Flew both families to Hawaii for a week, did all kinds of activities, had a great photographer document everything with video and stills, had a wonderful meal, etc.
Second wedding was at a courthouse in Vegas, with a ceremony at a cute little chapel in an industrial part of town in basically a strip mall, with none of our family or friends- just the 2 of us. My second marriage has lasted over 5x longer than my first one, so far, and we're both happy that I used my money for other things instead. No regrets. |
I forget the number of people, like 325 or 425.
Cost about $40k total, pocketed $45k or so from guests. Made $5k. Would have been more but wife wanted fancy photogs. Asian wedding FTW! |
around $3000. Went to a Sandals for a week and it was pretty awesome. Handful of non family guests and it was a great time.
We invited almost 600 people and 500 people showed up for the ceremony and/or the reception...I think 485 people at the reception.
We spent all the money I had in the bank which was $31k. At the end of the night we received $33k in cash/check...plus the usual wedding gifts. |
