That's a pretty bad infestation that may be too late to do anything about without some serious "rape the earth" measures.
For future reference, if you buy this http://www.ortho.com/smg/goprod/ortho-weed-b-gon-max-crabgrass-control/prod70146 and then apply it early in the year before they get bad, you can usually control them. What you do is go out a day or so before you mow the first time, and spray this on the green leaves of the dandelions. Not the yellow flowers. Look for the green leaves of the dandelion plant in your yard and spray them all, even if they don't have a yellow flower. Then a week later, a day or so before you mow, go do it again. I've been doing this for probably 15+ years and it is very rare that I have to do it more than twice, IF I get out and apply it early in the year. Don't spray it right before it rains, it will just wash off. If you wait until the flowers turn white and become a little pollen ball, you waited too long. |

My mother, God rest her soul, made dandelion salad every spring using a hot bacon dressing.
It tasted like boiled ass. |

Quoted: use a selective herbicide that will kill it and nothing else. View Quote First time we really cared about getting rid of them was before our wedding. Neighbor offered to spread a 2, 4 D product on the lawn. Nothing, nothing, wait -they look worse, GONE. Looking at the empty craters the dandelions left you could have told me aliens abducted them in the middle of the night. |

Who the f cares, save you're money on lawncare crap, buy the kids a BB gun

Preen pre-emergent seed killer+ broad leaf killer (such as weed-n-feed). This will kill what's in the lawn now, and prevent the puffballs from reseeding for the next 3-4 months.

The best thing for dandelions in my experience is just simply a thick and healthy lawn. I never use any sort of weed killer, just get out and pull them by hand at the beginning of the year then keep my lawn thick and healthy after that and it chokes them out.
|
|
I use one of those green stomper-pullers as shown on page 1. The only person with fewer dandelions on the block has a lawn service. Took a couple of seasons of aggressive work, now I can do my whole small yard in about 20 minutes each april.

It can be saved. But it will take a couple seasons.
Get a selective herbicide as others suggested but instead of focusing on killing weeds, focus on cultivating a healthy lawn. See those bare spots in your pics....that where your weeds are. A healthy, well-fed lawn with good roots will push out the weeds. Then it will be very easy to maintain. |

Most of my 2.5 acres is dandelions. I just mow over them wearing a n95 mask. When you have as many as I do its probably easier to round up and disc the whole thing.

I can't believe how many I have. This is the first year I've owned my property so I'm not sure if it's normal. I just mowed yesterday and my yard is already full of them.

This is the answer. Monoculture non-native turf grass is bad for you and your family. The dandelions and the bees that use them are good for you and your family. Too many? Pull some. No chemicals. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

Home Depot, bag of dandelion control, cheap spreader, quick stroll around the yard, done. Repeat every 6 weeks or so and you will be 99% weed free. I've seen exactly 1 pop up this year, but it died after the most recent fertilizer application.

I just mow with the deck on the highest setting and let nature do the rest. Plenty of healthy grass growing amongst the weeds. Some spots thicker than others. Clover is owning the backyard right now. But thats a nitrogen fixer and i love spreading the clippings on my garden. The abundance of clover also keeps the rabbits out of my garden. |

Fertilize them.
Make them healthy. Pick and clean them. Eat them. |

I've been walking the half acre lot that I live on with a bottle of dandelion spray killer, hosing the bastards down as "adagio for strings" plays in my head
The specific herbicides make a dent, but if you really want them gone, you have to actually pull them out yourself. |

Monoculture non-native turf grass is bad for you and your family. The dandelions and the bees that use them are good for you and your family. Too many? Pull some. No chemicals. Can you explain how grass is bad for my health ? Serious question Well, assuming you put pesticides fertilizer and herbicides on it, that's not good for much of anything that has direct contact with it, plus the run off that probably goes into your watershed is not so desirable. To the extent you maintain a monoculture of plants that require more and more input that give nothing back you are depleting natural forage for bees and other pollinators, which has a negative impact on the ability to grow food not just in your yard but in the general vincinity. What's more, since few insects will live in a perfectly manicured lawn, there's nothing for the birds and other critters to eat, which also has a negative impact on the food web. So, my view is, nice lawn is bad for everyone. That said, I live in a development and I have some lawn. I don't put any chemicals on it and there are some weeds. But it looks good actually. I aerate and I hand dig some weeds to keep things more or less in check. Most of the landscaping is native plants and, again, no chemicals of any kind are used. I also keep my water run off on site and manage it with a rain garden. Every year I get rid of more turf grass in favor of native perennials and shrubs. Less to mow, less gas and oil used, less mower exhaust. Or I'm a crazy hippy. Not sure. |
