Newborns are vulnerable in many ways - infections, kidnapping, theft, mistaken identity, etc.

If not authorized, you as John Q. Public will not get into any maternity ward outside of some third world level "hospital" on any kind of ruse.  Maternity wards are usually separately entranced and 24/7 guarded.  You need prior clearance with an identity bracelet that will be scanned.  Any non-maternity staff that are working there - maintenance, etc - are escorted.

The maternity staff have no tolerance for out-of-policy actions.  It's their asses on the line.  You will be subject to arrest.

Frankly, if it was any of my family in maternity, I wouldn't want any sneaky pete's there.  It's not Karen, it's Kareful.

Enjoy the post-birth pics, video or facetime.  Congratulations on your grandchild!

Our local hospital implemented some rather militaristic security measures when cases cleansers and N95 masks were stolen off a loading dock at the start of Covid.

Obviously the medical staff has their magnetic ID cards on a lanyard to swipe through the security doors.
Non-medical staff have a magnetic swipe ID card with a unique number and color.

When checking in:
Each patient has a colored ID card with a unique number assigned to them.
Visitors have a colored ID card with a unique number.
Vendors/delivery people have colored ID cards with a unique number.

Every day the color for patient's, visitor's, vendor's ID cards are rotated.

There is security stationed everywhere checking cards. Because there are so few people in the halls, it's easy for security to check.

Good luck!

My wife worked on the Neonatal floor at OHSU in Portland, getting in late at night was easy if you had Chinese food.  She worked other hospitals as a Agency nurse and they were all pretty much the same.  Chinese food opened all the doors.
