The example you set is irreplaceable - you are not. When my older son started college, the university asked us to leave a note of encouragement for our children to read after we had gone back home. While most parents poured their hearts out in tearful messages of love and support, mine simply read "Don't Fuck Up!" Being injured or dying for some store's merchandise would, in my opinion, constitute "Fucking Up." While it is very true that we cannot control every aspect of our lives, I believe that it is incumbent upon us to exert as much control as we can over those that we can. Not grappling with individuals such as these is one of those times. "Died Fighting For A Bloomingdale's Purse" is not what I want for my epitaph, and I believe that this is an appropriate legacy to pass on to my children. YmMV.
