When I started working overseas I met some Eastern Europeans as well as some others who were starting to say the same thing and warning that it was going to happen if it wasn't shut down hard- but that we wouldn't have the backbone to look at history and do what needed to be done. They had a lot more to say, but it gets more depressing... It's one of the reasons why I've never minded living in other countries- it's one thing walking into a messed up situation, you pretty much know what you're getting, but it's another story watching your own country imploded and knowing there's nothing you can do about it. Those of you who still think this story has a happy ending I wish I shared your enthusiasm, but I don't.

Many things will be the same as the Yugo collapse and others will be different.
One example is most Europeans are much more culturally conditioned to "follow the rules" and that leads to a more docile population as long as any government is marginally functional. People in the US west and south are much more inclined to exhibit individual action - cajun navy and after disasters people are about helping neighbors. Urban hell holes wait for the government to rescue them. |
