I'm about to get a hydrometer as it doesn't initially taste like 50%ABV - although it does after 10 minutes
A hydrometer won't work, the dissolved sugar from the added cherries will increase the density, and give you a false low reading. To get an accurate reading you will need both a refractometer and a hydrometer.
Or you can do spirit by indication with just a hydrometer.
Take a hydrometer reading, boil off half the volume of the sample, then top up to original volume with distilled water.
Plug the results into this formula
SI = (SG2 – SG1)*1000
%ABV = (0.008032927443 * SI^2) + (0.6398537044 * SI) – 0.001184667159
How will that help if he doesn't know the original gravity?
The starting gravity in this case, is the gravity of the bottled product. The second gravity is after boiling off half the volume and topping back up with distilled water. It's a PIA, but the most accurate way to determine concentration when there are dissolved solids, without buying expensive equipment.
