OP, sorry for your loss, meant to say that in first post.

I was born on the southside of Chicago long ago. Hence the screen name. Was raised in an orphanage by an old blues musician, no wait, that was a movie.

33rd and Normal, grew up a couple blocks from Hizzoner Richard J. Daley.

Lived there, Cicero, Harvey, Joliet area.

Downstate to Williamson County where I lived with grandparents in a very small town.

Joined the Air Force to see the world and got sent to Rantoul.

I know a bit about Illinois.

Bridgeport?  Gross.  I was the neighborhood directly south

We have homes in both parts of the state……

South subs of Chicagoland. Just a bit north of I-80. There’s still a bit of beans and corn about a mile away.

Our refuge about 30 mins south of Effingham.  Spend most weekends and long holidays there for now.

Will be down there permanently in about 8yrsish

I too used to live a few miles north of that line, but maybe there was an exception since my backyard was all corn

I did not choose to be born there.

I too lived in Romeoville, went to high school there. Class of 70 something.
ConEd plant across 53, my grandmother asked when the ship was leaving. :)

With that said, I don't care much for baseball, and when I do watch it or play it on a game, I prefer the Sox over the Cubs anyway.

Know what my nickname for Sox fans is?

South side scum

My mother's family hails from Minier.

ETA: Still too small for a McDonald's, even the express version.

Here up north its all

And everyone has a thick southern accent!

Went down to Vienna to bury my mom's ashes on her parent's grave. Different world from up north. Think I might be an misguided country boy.

that’s only downstate with the southern accent. Everywhere else has a neutral accent. Just like bordering states of Iowa and Wisconsin

Everywhere in WI, MN. Some folks have stronger accents than others, as is the case anywhere.

They start to talk that way in northern Illinois, northern Iowa.

I find it endearing.

I went from “dees guise over by dere” to “howdy ya’ll” or something like that.

I hear it when I talk to my family in Chicago and Wisconsin.

Where you at isn't Chicago (easy to recognize the bridge, although that specific city is larger than 30k)  You are probably as far west as I am.  It isn't bad out here at all.  When my backyard ends, a farm field starts.  I like it that way.

I was born IN THE CITY....I want no parts of that life.

The bustling metropolis of Pittsburg my friend. :)

Granddad was a coal miner.

Not to be confused with Metropolis, Illinois where I also spent time.
