I received this as a gift.

Usually only drink Vodka, so do I just chug it the same way?

I’m far from a connoisseur.  I at least know it’s bourbon and you’re supposed to ‘savor’ it in some fashion.

Go easy on me.  I didn’t even start drinking coffee black until several months ago.  I have little class. Attachment Attached File

Poor in glass.  Sip like it's hot coffee.  Pretend to enjoy it long enough until one day you actually do.

Okay.  I'm thinking this may take a while.

Does it need to be cold or something?

Best to try neat, small sips and hold on tongue until burn subsides then swallow. Breath out slowly and see what you can pick up if you want to be fussy about it.

If you find it too harsh neat, add drops of water until you find your “sweet spot”. Room temp IMO best but find what you like with water/ice

Alternatively just mix into a Negroni, Manhattan, or Old Fashioned  and enjoy

each to his own. some use ice, some use metal ice cubes/as not to "water down their whiskey" But old timers would only
mix water with whiskey. Each to his own, figure out what you like and do it.

Hmmm...Okay, I'll try that.

Sorry for the questions.

Even my wife can take it neat straight out of the liquor cabinet.  She still has all her teeth.  Put on your big boy pants.

Little sips, an ice cube or splash of water can help bring the flavor out. The JB Black is better off mixed with something.

This.
Add water to throttle back the alcohol and bring out the taste to see what you like. Give plenty of attention to the nose factor... it's a big part of the flavor.

I'll allow it...

Some people like a drop of distilled water added to the drink to open it up a bit. Do NOT use ice OP!

Those are decent drinks. As others have said, try it neat to see what you think of the actual flavor.

If you like the taste but it is too harsh, water it down or drink it on the rocks. Sip and enjoy as mentioned above.

If you want to cover the taste, mix it with your choice of soda. I prefer 7up or sprite. I also like mixing with a good ginger beer. I'm not a fan of dark sodas and bourbon but dont let that stop you from trying.

Knob Creek is one of my favorites.  I would recommend going Low Proof - High Proof.  So Basil, Jim and then Knob.  I always try things neat and then add ice if so inclined.  Once the bottle gets about half empty it needs to be finished - air will ruin it.  Drink a quarter of the bottle then move on to the next one.  Go back to the other in a month after some air has gotten into it and see how it changes.  Some I don't like taste better after a little air is in the bottle and it transforms a little.

Learn how to make an old fashioned but I prefer Rye for those.  Also love Kentucky Mules.  Also tend to use Rye in that but I wouldn't hesitate to put that Knob Creek in there.

And all you people are spilling over into tequila now, so it will be ruined by the yuppies. Way harder to make quality agave juice than quality corn/rye/barley squeezins.

Op, go to gin. Gin is lonely.

OP,

It's perfectly OK to drink that Whiskey with a "drop" of water or a couple of ice cubes, or both.  You'll never be able to tell the difference between those bottles if you don't.

Water helps deliver the true flavor of the whiskey.  The molecule that makes the delivery possible is called guaiacol - it wants to stay attached to the ethanol molecule (in the glass), the H2O combines with it, and that distinct aroma of the hootch is launched up into the air.  It's magic.

Honestly, thanks for the replies.

I tried the Jim Beam straight.  Going to take some getting used to.  I added a very small bit of water after the first few sips.

Not afraid to admit I'm a lightweight when it comes to taste.

It's good advice.

Bourbon and branch.

Or, 3-4 large ice cubes, pour to just cover the ice, wait until the glass shows condensation, and start sipping.

Just two ways to get a little water into the mix, one way chills the bourbon down, which can be pleasant.

I like it on the rocks.  Wife and I prefer the big ice cubes as well.  Get the silicone ice trays for whiskey.  I think it tastes better out of a nice lowball but a damned Solo cup will work.

This.  "Neat" in a tumbler is the way.

Only add ice if you decide you hate the flavor of whiskey and don't want to taste it at all, but still want to drink.

If you want to start with the easiest to drink to first and work your way up.
The Basil Hayden is going to be very tame with not much going for it at all.
Next comes the Jim Beam which will have a bit more flavor than the BH.
The Knob Creek will come through with the best flavor.
Just drink it neat (straight) or with a small splash of water if you need to (or an ice cube instead of the splash of water).

Drink it like I do and my uncles and grandfathers did….over ice, a lot of ice and minimal liquor, will chill it and not dilute it too much…pour as you need more.

This is how I have been drinking for years….not a big drinker or a whiskey/bourbon snob by no means…maybe drink 6x a year and very little when I do.

Start with the Basil Hayden. It's pretty low proof and shouldn't light you up too bad. That one needs to be neat. I like a little ice with anything 100 proof or more.

Not too much to figure out.

Pour a dram in a glass. Take a small sip. It’s OK to wince . If the alcohol or flavor is a little intense, add an ice cube (single not plural) or a splash of water. DO NOT drown your drink in water, it quickly becomes stale, and tastes like it was served in an old ash tray.

When I drink Whiskey (whether it’s Bourbon, Scotch, Rye, whatever) different brands remind me of different memories in my life. Whiskies are kinda unique like that.

Thanks guys.

I'm still on my first 3 ounces of the JB with a bit of water.  I think I'm going to try the ice thing next go 'round.  No ice in the house at the moment, so I'll just deal with it like this for now.

It's not too bad, but definitely different from my usual water and vodka.  I love the smell, as mentioned earlier.  Just takes getting used to the taste.

That being said grab a glass, pour a few fingers worth and sip on it. None of this mixing/ice/other BS. Sip it like it was intended, room temperature and neat. Water makes it taste like shit, and ice melts into water. So pour some, sip some, and enjoy good ol' corn squizin'
