You need to start off by asking some questions to find out where he really stands on the issue. That statement was too neutral to go on the offensive.

On the face of it, that statement doesn't appear problemTic.
But we need context OP. Is he one of these, "I support your right to have a gun for hunting, but nobody needs an AR-15", types? |

He just needs educated on the fact that the second part of his thesis is fallacious as that's what a ton of laws, regulations and Executive orders have already done. OP, preface your reply with, "I agree with you except for the infringements that have already occurred", then lay out some of the more egregious ones like the SAFE Act and the assault weapons ban. He seems to be one the right track....but ignorant of the facts. Help him to understand.
