I was exploring lesser viewed galleries of the Louvre while my Daughter and her friends braved the crowds to get a glimpse of the “Mona Lisa” (which is just famous for the same reason the Kardashians are). I found an interesting Renaissance painting of the traditional Madonna portrayal except that she was holding TWO babies. I have often wondered what the artist what trying to tell us. I believe it was uncredited.

I think it depicts yet another example of a stupid person trying to be something he isn't, either imagining himself Lord of All the Animals, or Lord of All the People, or thinking he can get whatever he desires by tricking the gods with false pleas or bribing them with offerings. in the end he fools himself most of all. in this case, wandering around the woods in the dark with antlers on his head like an idiot.

does look similar to a Gustave Dore engraving.

That art represents Fred Flintstone coming home from his moose lodge meeting much later then Wilma allows him to stay out and facing the wrath of the wife that all common man has to face from time to time.
It is a classic timeless struggle that went on from before the dinosaurs.

If I had to take a stab at it I would say one child represents the human aspect of Christ while the other represents what was/is to be the spiritual.

Today in GD I learned that the man-like creature with antlers is a depiction of a Celtic deity named Cernunnos.

I formerly associated the antler guy with Scandinavian folklore.
