Bob Gibson, greatest pitcher of his era, threw with ALL of his body:

I can't find a picture of his infamous stare -- the total mask of hostility with which he faced down batters -- but this picture actually sums up how much violence Bob Gibson would unleash upon you.

Those that are truly iconic need no identification.

As opposed to anything having to do with 1970s rock bands.

I remember when it happened. I was 12 years old.

Every newspaper and magazine had that photo. It was everywhere. And it was iconic of the times we lived in.

Cool shot and I can look at that photo for a long time.  Interesting to see one engine has a narrow smoke stack and the other is super wide.  Anyone know which side is East and which side is West?

Meeting of the transcontinental railroad. I had a grade school teacher who spent a lot of time talking about this moment and the impact of a railway across the country had on the growth of our nation

Like looking at our U.S. map. Left is west, right is east.

The five Sullivan brothers who served together on the USS Juneau, and subsequently perished together when the Juneau was sunk during combat 13 Nov, 1942.

Saving Private Ryan was loosely based on them right?

Obliquely. The loss of all five Sullivans prompted immediate Federal legislation that prevented brothers from serving together in the same unit/ship/bomber/etc.

This is the one that was made famous, when the Hells Angels (later exonerated) killed the black dude after he whipped out a gun or a knife (I forget which).

What made it famous is that it was universally recognized as being symbolic of the end of the hippie era of "peace and love".

I don't know if it's an "iconic"  image, since it is not well known.  But, since the thread has turned into a "post interesting images" thread, it seems appropriate.

It may be the only photo showing a British Mosquito bomber over the city, during Operation Carthage in Nazi occupied Copenhagen during WW2 (March 1945)   The plan was to bomb the SS headquarter, to aid the Danish resistance, but shit went sideways and most of the bombs ended up in a girl's school next door, killing almost 100 small children and nuns.

May not be as iconic, but a great painting of the Battle of Franklin, TN (Nov. 30, 1864).  My great x4 uncle was Colonel (later Brigadier General) Emerson Opdycke, who led the 125th Ohio Volunteers in the counterattack that turned back the Confederate attack at the Carter House.  Col. Opdycke is the one using his revolver as a club.

I was damn proud to be a medic and thankful I got the chance to serve in that capacity after being told I was too broken to be infantry anymore. I extremely fortunate that I never lost a US Soldier under my care. There are 6 people that I cared for that got a chance to make it back home alive to see their families.

That happened my first semester there.  I saw the stack maybe a week before it fell, and later that morning when it did (it fell at like 3am or something), when it was still an active rescue scene.  It was the defining event during my time there, and was like an open wound that deeply impacted everyone.  Twelve students dead, and several other severely injured for life.

I have the upmost respect for 68 Ws. I profoundly remember a memorial service I attend for one I had the fortune to know. A few of those attending were individuals that he had saved in Iraq: They were there with their kids. Kids who would not have been conceived if it wasn’t for the combat medic who made sure the soldier who would ultimately be their father made it home
