Can you imagine if Trump was in office and did this?

The MSM would fap themselves unconscious.

This country is in serious trouble if we had to fight here or abroad.

I was thinking the same thing. What if this happened under Trump? The talking heads would be seizing all over tv about how foolish and dangerous Trump is. Anonymous sources claim Trump knew it was a hobby balloon .yada yada yada

Our government is infested with unqualified diversity hires and misgendered weirdos.  This isn’t surprising.  National defense seems to be our least important priority.

Not likely but wouldn't even a pico balloon and its payload cause damage to a jet engine if ingested?

It must be the aerial equivalent of "furtive movements".

The balloon was making a move, he had to get it on.

hows that work exactly??

objects detected, alert was sent, briefings were given, jets scrambled, pilots acquired target, clearance was given and missiles launched...and not one person in that chain paused briefly to question or confirm the target was or was not a commonly purchased balloon...

sounds to me like the gov owes the club a harmless balloon and perhaps needs to ratchet back the panic attacks.

Ok that club owes us $400k for the ordinance used. We'll eat the fuel and labor costs this time.

Are you just as concerned about the approximately 1,800 actual weather balloons being launched daily around the world?

Twice a day, every day of the year, weather balloons are released simultaneously from almost 900 locations worldwide! This includes 92 released by the National Weather Service in the US and its territories.

This could have been prevented if there was only a publicly available tracking site for amateur balloons.

Too bad our MIL has no sigint capable of picking up well known amateur radio APRS trackers.

Either our govt at all levels is completely incompetent which is  very likely, or this was all part of the circus act for reasons.

Either way, it's bad.

my question also

with what we spend on defense, we don't have the capability to determine what something is?

and if we can't, shouldn't we?

I'm not concerned about that at all.  But you are correct in your second sentence that it is stupid.

Don't worry.  There will be FAA regulations on everything shortly.

As much as I hate Biden I will state the unpopular opinion here that there is a ton of Monday morning quarterbacking going on complaining about shootdowns 2 and later being a waste of taxpayer money.

There is plenty about Biden to be angry about, but if we had a Republican in office and even if they shot down the first balloon before it went over CONUS, I could easily see them taking the same course and shooting down 2 and later.

Wrong.  Biden only got balloon pop happy because he was a complete pussy with the Chinese.

He's acting like a child.

IF and that is a rather big "IF" the item was a balloon, I am thrilled that the dizzy fucks running the cuntry spent a million dollars to shoot a 12.00 party store balloon down.

Could the pilots not observe that the item was a fucking balloon?  I don't know, but I would expect a fly-by would easily be able to push a balloon around.

This whole charade is such fucking bullshit.  It's just silly.

...or:

If you have some time for me
Then I will sing a song for you
About ninety-nine balloons
On their way to the horizon
Perhaps you're thinking about me right now
Then I will sing a song for you
About ninety-nine balloons
And how one thing leads to another

Ninety-nine balloons
On their way to the horizon
Which people thought were UFOs from space
Therefore a general sent
A fighter squadron after them
To give the alarm if it was so
There were present on the horizon
At the ninety-nine balloons

Ninety-nine jet fighters
Each was a great warrior
Reckoned they were Captain Kirk
There was a great display of fireworks
The neighbors didn't get it at all
And soon felt under attack
So they shot at the horizon
At ninety-nine balloons

Ninety-nine ministers of war
Matches and petrol cans
They regarded themselves as clever people
Already on the scent of fat quarry
They shouted "War" and wanted power
Man, who would have thought
That someday it would come as far as this
Because of ninety-nine balloons

Ninety-nine years of war
Left no place for victors
There are no longer any ministers of war
And also no jet fighters
Today i'm making my rounds
I see the world lying in ruins
I have found a balloon
I think of you and let it fly
