Italy is great, but the food is just ok.

The food in Italy is "just ok"?

Unfortunately, when I was there last year, I thought it was just ok.

I immediately realized why they're so much skinner than we are.

Thought I was going to starve on the meager portions they served, combined with walking everywhere.

That town looks vaguely familiar. Is it anywhere near Florence?

No.  It's east of Naples on the opposite coast.

Not the most beautiful or artistic town, but it's home.

Yep.

It isn't Italian Food unless there is tomato sauce and/or cheese on it. And your soda better be warm, too.

Oh, what I wouldn't have given for a KFC or a McDonald's when I was stationed in Italy.

I went to the McDonalds by the Spanish Steps in Rome.

If you prefer that crap over real Italian food, I can see why you didn't like the food here.

When I passed through Rome airport, I couldn't help but notice all the fat British and American tourists stuffing their faces there.  There were also a few Europeans, but you could pick them out easily as they were below 250lbs.

Yeah, I don't know why it's such a PITA to copy&paste with the iPhone from Photobucket to here.

Anywho, here are a few pics of town from today.  Today is a holiday here in Italy, recognizing all the saints, so things have been quiet since I got here on Saturday night.

After the pasta, we had this for lunch:  Chichken, potatoes and mushrooms.  All from our land

Is that 11 small pieces of potatoes, a pork ear and a piece of abused bone, or just another version of lasagna....

To each his own.  Tastes great to me, and fill me up.

Then again, I'm not 250lbs with Levis overlapus like many.

There is something to be said about Italian cuisine that many Americans just don't get on their first time there.

Americans always expect salty foods, packed with preservatives and other shit we can't pronounce. Most of the food here in the US is like that, and Americans are accustomed to it and expect such things in their food. In ways it has made Americans unable to taste real food.

In Europe, and Italy especially, it is the various ingredients and the spices that make up the flavor - the actual food is what you taste. The difference in cheeses, sauces, various spices, the fresh vegetables, the fresh meats, how the meat was made, etc.

Its something you won't "get" until you go and try it a couple times or live over there. My first day in Naples I thought the food was awful.... six months later it was acceptable.... a year later and I was hooked. I remember flying back to the US for a week and having steak dinner at a restaurant - it was horrible compared to what I had been eating in Italy.

I still miss that food, and I was last there in Feb of 09 with the gf - same situation, she couldn't stand the food but I fucking loved it. I still miss it to this day and nothing compares to real Italian cooking.
