This.

Bend your elbows so your forearms are parallel with the ground. Now slightly rest your forearms down some until it feels comfortable. That is your bench height.

You can add a chair to make a tall bench a sit down bench, but if you put a 32" bench in your shop you will regret it every time you try to work at it standing up.

Pretty sure this was 40" to the bottom of the countertop. Slouching when tinkering on stuff sucks and being able to sit is nice sometimes. I still need to deck over the shelf under the right side but overall I'm happy with it.

Thanks for all the replies. I went with a 40" height and it's about 2" below my elbows. I think it will be perfect.

I'm building a rolling work bench/station and want it to be higher than average so I can stand and work without being bent over. I was shooting for 38" to 40", but forgot to figure in the countertop. It's going to be 41".

I'm 5'11" if that matters

(Update)

It's done. Went with a 40" counter height. We had these cabinets left over from a store remodel at work. Boss lady wanted them gone and gave them to me with 4 pieces of left over countertop.

I think it will be perfect for tinkering.

You're asking midgets with low testosterone if 41" is too tall for a workbench?

It's a 4 plug power strip with adjustable lights on either side. I didn't want something with a dozen sockets and the lights seemed like they might be useful. It was around $40. I've got a articulating task light coming that clamps to the desk for my main source of light.

Good call tominjax.

I build my benches to the same height.  Going to try to get one installed today in fact.

Our boxes at work are 49.5”. It’s not a comfortable working height, sitting or standing.

A good height is to make the top level with your navel.
