That fits in an AR-15, OP is looking for AR-10 sized cartridges.  For the AR-15 the 6mm ARC appears to be on top but...

...don't worry in 2 years they will create a new round and it will be the big push for awhile....just look at the .224 Valkyrie.  This theory applies to both the AR-10 & AR-15.

I was going to say .30-06. But also wasnt6 the 6.5 x 55 Swedish Mauser a very well respected round? Accuracy? Enough power etc.

The 6.5 Swedish was designed for rifles made in the late 19th century.

I own three rifles in this caliber, and although it is extremely accurate at 100-200 yds., it drops off quickly after that.

For longer distance shooting, I fall back on my .308.

The bullet is more important than the bore diameter. A M193 will outperform a M80 FMJ.

I want to make a .300 Savage AR-10 just to confuse and infuriate people.

But if .308 isn't good enough for OP, then .30 TC will be nice and similar-looking too.

SG Ammo right now - cheapest ball is 90 cents.  And they have 6.5 CM - 90 cents.

.308 is perfectly fine.  6.8SPC if you want a small frame/short action.

Implying that cheap surplus was one of the 308’s best features and now that it’s gone it doesn’t have much if any of an edge over 6.5 Creedmoor.

At long range, 6.5 Creedmoor gives better performance than 308 but in side of 400 yards favors 308.

And the 6.5 has less recoil at any range.

Not sure if serious, but the 6.5 Creedmoor was pretty much designed to do what you are asking.

if you are going to be shooting inside of 400 yards I suggest handloading the 130 gr ttsx barnes boat tail bullet to max pressure.  it should get up to 3200fps and has an extremely flat trajectory but beyond that it starts rapidly losing steam.  these bullets shot sub MOA out of a tikka rifle  no need to look for a different cartridge, these bullets basically turn the 308 into a 270 winchester. look to the barnes website for load data.

Yep, that’s my load for deer the past 10 years, really hammers them.  I did play with the 110 TTSX this year, dropped 3 deer, but I can’t say any better than with the 130’s.

6.5 creedmoor with 140gr bullets at 3000fps when SiG starts making 6.5 Jesus moor with their hybrid case design.

But really any of the round based on a 308 but slightly necked down will be better for almost every purpose.

6mm Rem/.243winchester, 260 Rem or its almost identical cousin 6.5 creedmoor.  6.8-08 aka 277 fury aka 6.8x51 aka 6.8 common or 7mm-08 are all the same package size as 308.

Why would you switch? A good lesson my dad taught me was stick with calibers you can find anywhere. Any gun shop. Walmart.

22LR, 9mm, 223, 308, 300WM, 50BMG.

I never believed him until a buddy of mine ordered a 257 Roberts. The gun shop had to special order the ammo. I was like, dang dad, you are smart.

The popular hunting calibers might actually be easier to find in a panic.

I bet you'd have better odds of finding a box of 7mm Mag in stock somewhere than you would have trying to find any flavor of 5.56 during the next panic.

Just some food for thought.

What's funny is that 7.62x51mm (NATO) - developed in the 1950s - is VERY similar to the rimless 7.65x53mm cartridge that Paul Mauser developed for his 1889 rifle.

People just keep making "new" cartridges when they could use use existing designs.

I'd say the exception lies with modern designs that noticeably improve the performance of older cartridges, such as any of the Ackley Improved variants.

Getting my bolt gun a new barrel at GAP and we went through the options.  A few sounded somewhat interesting in 6 and 7MM but but in the end the 2000 rounds of match ammo I have in .308 says it’s going to be .308.

I know its 700-1200yd performance becomes mortar-like but my use continues to be 0-600yds max.  It does fine.

It's hard to argue against any Ackley Improved variant.

I'm not sure why those haven't become the norm by now, and replaced the original cartridge.

.308 is the way.

Unless of course you are recoil sensitive or have a vagina then 6.5cm would be the best option. 6.5 cm is lighter on the recoil and you can also brag to friends and range buddies that you own a fad round pushed by a bullet manufacturer. You can also take a deer 3.5 miles away during a hurricane.

For me .308 is all I need.

Seems like I've read a ton of issues about Ackley stuff having feeding problems. Don't seem to see it as much now but I also don't really see many Ackley builds. There's a reason that the more heavily tapered cartridges are so popular in semi auto and full auto guns so I assume some of that also applies to bolt guns. If not everyone would do it and get that extra capacity.

I sorta "made my bed" with rifle cartridges years ago. 5.56/.308/50BMG with .458SOCOM as a wild card. I have so many 308 components it makes no sense to changes horses at this stage of the race. Its a fine cartridge.

I shoot .308.  I’ve done a lot of reading about 6.5CM and it’s a sweet ass round.  I’m too invested in .308 to change, but if I was looking for a new hunting round, that would be it.

My friend is getting into it for deer and may use it this year.  Tons of different hunting ammo available for 6.5CM.
