My experience here in the south, any sort of short handle shovel = sharpshooter. Calling it a spade will likely get you a grumpy workforce, and if you are employing any sort of workforce that requires the use of digging implements, you need them to not be grumpy.

This, we also called it a "heater".

As in if you complained of being cold on the jobsite, you could go use the "heater" to clean up, or hand finish a trench or something.

I take deep offense at that.  My cousin is an idiom.

I prefer the way my dad said it:

Sometimes you have to call a spade a fucking shovel.

Spade is an archaic racial slur when used in certain context. I don't usually think of the saying as racist when I hear it but know that many do so I avoid that expression. Sometimes when it used in a certain way by certain people you get the vibe that they are not talking about shovels.

You're just whitewashing it.

Why do black Americans get so butthurt over a phrase that isn't about them?

They are culturally appropriating the butthurt about it.

Why would a shovel be racist?

Because they require initiative to use.

Spade is derived from espada.  You're calling a sword a sword.

And here I always thought it related to people calling spade cards bullshit like "Death Cards" and other such crap instead of calling them spades.
