Let me settle this.
I think we all know or met somebody who's parents gave them a retarded or misspelled name. If you meet them, of course you call them Jif to their face. But you know that once they're not around, you and everyone else calls them how their name is really meant to be pronounced, Gif. For the record, both Jif and Gif sound retarded. Gif is just a little less retarded. |

View Quote And those of us with Macs were the ones who created all the GIFs you saw when you launched Mosaic on your little Windows box. I, along with tens of thousands of other in my profession, created all those graphical interactive kiosks, laserdiscs and CD-ROMs with Hypercard, Macromedia Director (Lingo) and Authorware, and then migrated our creative work to the web in the early 1990s. In all that time, I heard the term GIF about a million times (even from PC geeks) and heard the term JIF exactly ONCE, and that person was immediately corrected by everyone within earshot. Everybody at Adobe calls it GIF. Only about one in 100,000 people call it a JIF. But I believe in individual rights. Use the stupid pronunciation if that makes you happy. |

Bunch of cunning linguists up in this thread.
Or maybe cunty linguists. However it doesn't matter what the creator says, once out in the public purview most people pronounce it Gif. Jif sounds stupid. |

And yet everyone continues to ignore other acronyms that are pronounced differently than their base words.

Actually, you've got that wrong. Jif is confirming that it's pronounced the same as the peanut butter. If you're looking for all the GIFs, there's only one GIPHY," said Alex Chung, founder and CEO of GIPHY, in a press release. "If you're a soft G, please visit Jif.com. If you're a hard G, thank you, we know you're right. Whether you like your Gs hard or soft, let's all share some fun and let peanut butter unite us in saying GIF and eating Jif." The Gif jar even says "Hard G" on it. That's what you get for reading CNN. ETA: Irony of the whole thing is that the pronunciation was tied to the peanut butter. “The creator of the GIF image format, Steve Wilhite of CompuServe, when deciding on the pronunciation, said he deliberately chose to echo the American peanut butter brand, Jif, and CompuServe employees would often say ‘Choosy developers choose GIF(jif)’, playing off of Jif’s television commercials. If you hear anyone pronounce GIF with a soft G, it’s because they know something of this history.” Some marketing person at Jif came up with a ploy to sell peanut butter...and it worked. |
