It is completely difficult in my country to get the weapon and keep it at home.
License is almost impossible that is why you can not find weapons in houses. Even small thieves cannot find it easily. Yesterday in the area where I live, a young man attacked a money exchange shop and he was able to steal about 7000 dollars and he escaped. The funny thing is he was holding only a big sharp knife when he thritten the staff there, took the money and ran away.

IIRC knives are statistically more deadly than firearms. If you can't get a gun, get a big can of pepper spray which will give you some "reach" so you can hit bad guys from a distance. Other than that it's all hand to hand combat.
