Those who remember Japan next to China come from a different timeline. Those very same people will often feel like they are living in a dream and that everything seems "off" especially when comparing to their earlier years.

I distinctly recall (a number of years ago) North Korea lobbing inert missles into the Sea of Japan and in the direction of Japan...   hence the tension between the two countries.

Japan was definitely off the coast of China. I recall stories from WW2 that involved Allied airmen landing in China after missions over Japan because they didn't have enough fuel to return to the carriers. This should be proof positive of the geographical location of Japan.
