I like your set-up. Sure looks classy and beats a shitty plastic razor in a cup.

Been doing it this way for several years. Way cheaper than any Gillette product.

Tried a Feather yet? How bad did you bleed? At $30 for a razor and 10-cents or less per blade, it's waaaay cheaper than the multi-blade devices, and and much better quality shave, too. . |

My only question is how do they work on the neck? I have a beard and my neck hair is the only area I shave. It grows in about 87x different directions so clobbering it with a 3x blade disposable works well.
Wife buys me some offbrand on Amazon that works well. Interested in DE razors tho |

After making the switch myself around ten years ago, I could not figure out why men ever moved away from safety razors. I used personas for years but I recently switched to Astra blades and I think they are feel smoother as I shave. I shave right after a hot shower and only use hot water as my shaving medium. Saves even more time/money and works fine for me.

I've used a few different kinds, and the Merkur standard blade was terrible. I use Wilkinson Sword blades, although I've tried Feather blades. But these days I rock a beard and just use the razor to keep the edges trimmed every few days. My neck hair is similar. I've learned over time which direction to shave, and where, to reduce irritation. Just make sure you get a styptic pencil to help with the probable bleeding during the learning curve. Cold water helps stop bleeding from tiny nicks, too. I use a Merkur handle and various types of blades. So smooth compared to disposable or Mach-4 or whatever BS that was.
It takes awhile to get comfortable with holding and which way to shave, but after awhile you get the hang of it. Been over 4 years and I haven't looked back. Blades are cheap too. |

Feather definitely puts the "holy hell I didn't know I could bleed from that damn many places" back into shaving. I still like mine anyway. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes |

Kai in a Fatip. Was using Silver Blue in a 90 year old long comb.

Fuck Gillete, once I’m finished with my blades, ordered in bulk, I’m switching over. Hey Gillete, do you hear us NOW!!!

Hmm. been considering doing this. Any pointers to what brand? Don't have a lot of dough right now.

It amazes me that there are still people using expensive plastic pieces of shit rather than a safety razor...

Dad shaved with a straight razor his entire life.
Both of my older brothers tried and nearly bleed to death. I've was traumatized so bad I've been afraid to ever try one. So we were regulated to the safety razors. I've floated around to electric and multi blades but I always come back to a safety razor. Hot washcloths a few times to soften your beard and raise the hair. Then a good high quality soap or cream, something that lathers well. Pull your skin taught while shaving. Then pay attention to what the hell your doing. Safety razors will cut you if you get lazy.... Sliced my neck around Christmas hurrying. Was afraid to remove the washcloth, lots of blood everywhere. |

I find Harry's to be the most efficient time-wise. I didn't know how to shave with a cartridge until I learned how to shave with a DE razor.
EDIT: No, Harry's isn't SJW. Their marketing is clueless and chasing their tale, but they aren't truly SJW like Procter & Gamble. |

Do you cut yourself with cartridge razors? DEs are only slightly less protected. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes |

No issues here, use a sharp blade and take your time. My shaves take barely longer than a multi blade but are far superior. I'm using a Merkur razor and Astra blades ordered in the 100 pack, Col. Conk's shave soap, much preferred over working up a lather from a paste. YMMV. Quoted:
Edwin jagger de89, and Astra Superior Platinum blades for me. Swapped about 5 years ago and never looked back. |

almost embarrassed to say I use the dollar store blades and they work fine.
I run both sides of a new blade through a wine cork before using after seeing some sorta tip online - seems to deburr and get some of that new sharp blade harshness out |

Although Taylor of Bond Street makes some good stuff, I’ve switched to the old school Italian brand Proraso to good effect.

I usually prefer soaps over creams but that Taylor of Old Bond Street is some good stuff. It takes very little effort at all to get it to explode into a beautiful lather.
It was a major upgrade when I switched from canned shaving cream and a cheap plastic handle butterfly handle safety razor (which was still an improvement over the cartridge razors and then disposable razors I was using before) to a much better safety razor, a decent boar brush and a decent shave soap. I'll never go back. |
