Holy hell that is close.  My face is so smooth I could polish a rifle barrel with it.

10/10 would recommend. Send your plastic to the trash where it belongs.

Used merkur blade.  Didn't bleed near as bad as I was expecting.  Just had one little knick.

I've used a few different kinds, and the Merkur standard blade was terrible.  I use Wilkinson Sword blades, although I've tried Feather blades.  But these days I rock a beard and just use the razor to keep the edges trimmed every few days.

At $30 for a razor and 10-cents or less per blade, it's waaaay cheaper than the multi-blade devices, and and much better quality shave, too. .

My only question is how do they work on the neck? I have a beard and my neck hair is the only area I shave. It grows in about 87x different directions so clobbering it with a 3x blade disposable works well.

Wife buys me some offbrand on Amazon that works well. Interested in DE razors tho

I switched two years ago when my wife bought me a safety razor for Christmas, so nothing to do with Gillette.

I never realized how shitty 87 blades shaved till I switched to a safety razor.

I’ll never go back.

My neck hair is similar.  I've learned over time which direction to shave, and where, to reduce irritation.  Just make sure you get a styptic pencil to help with the probable bleeding during the learning curve.  Cold water helps stop bleeding from tiny nicks, too.

I think using a lather and brush helped significantly.  Stands the hair up so it gets closer.  It was a bit awkward on the right side of the neck since I'm right handed but I'm convinced it will get easier.

I’m also bearded and have thick neck hair.

I just shave in one direction across the whole mess.  Use lots of soap, don’t press too hard, make a couple of passes.  Baby butt smooth.

After making the switch myself around ten years ago, I could not figure out why men ever moved away from safety razors. I used personas for years but I recently switched to Astra blades and I think they are feel smoother as I shave. I shave right after a hot shower and only use hot water as my shaving medium. Saves even more time/money and works fine for me.

Gentleman Jon Alum Block is king.  Wet it and rub it all over your bleedy spots.

Feathers cut the shit out of me on my neck

ETA: I gotta brag that I do use a Gillette....from the 1920s 18k gold plated.

I use a Merkur handle and various types of blades.  So smooth compared to disposable or Mach-4 or whatever BS that was.

It takes awhile to get comfortable with holding and which way to shave, but after awhile you get the hang of it.

Been over 4 years and I haven't looked back.  Blades are cheap too.

Yeah I looked like someone shot me in the face with birdshot the first time I used a Feather blade.  Blood everywhere.  They definitely demand good shaving technique and properly prepared skin/hair.  Admittedly I think I used a Feather the 2nd or 3rd time I ever used a safety razor, so that probably didn't help.

Dad shaved with a straight razor his entire life.
Both of my older brothers tried and nearly bleed to death.
I've was traumatized so bad I've been afraid to ever try one.

So we were regulated to the safety razors. I've floated around to electric and multi blades but I always come back to a safety razor.
Hot washcloths a few times to soften your beard and raise the hair. Then a good high quality soap or cream, something that lathers well. Pull your skin taught while shaving.
Then pay attention to what the hell your doing. Safety razors will cut you if you get lazy....
Sliced my neck around Christmas hurrying. Was afraid to remove the washcloth, lots of blood everywhere.

I find Harry's to be the most efficient time-wise. I didn't know how to shave with a cartridge until I learned how to shave with a DE razor.

EDIT: No, Harry's isn't SJW. Their marketing is clueless and chasing their tale, but they aren't truly SJW like Procter & Gamble.

The blade angle is more variable than a cartridge though.

Merkur makes amazing razors.  Their blades are not very good at all.   My favorite blades are Israeli red Personna Platinum, Polsilver Super Iridium (I have a huge sleeve still of NOS Super Iridums), Blue Personna's, Gillete Super Thin Thai (I won't buy anymore of these when I am done with the card.

I switched three years ago. I only shave my neck half the year as I grow a beard starting in September. No issues here, use a sharp blade and take your time. My shaves take barely longer than a multi blade but are far superior. I'm using a Merkur razor and Astra blades ordered in the 100 pack, Col. Conk's shave soap, much preferred over working up a lather from a paste. YMMV.

almost embarrassed to say I use the dollar store blades and they work fine.
I run both sides of a new blade through a wine cork before using after seeing some sorta tip online - seems to deburr and get some of that new sharp blade harshness out

Well that sucks, but by a lucky mistake when I started into DE shaving, I order a hundred count box of Astra blades. Amazon screwed up and sent me 500. They told me to keep them when I contacted them about returning them.

I usually prefer soaps over creams but that Taylor of Old Bond Street is some good stuff. It takes very little effort at all to get it to explode into a beautiful lather.

It was a major upgrade when I switched from canned shaving cream and a cheap plastic handle butterfly handle safety razor (which was still an improvement over the cartridge razors and then disposable razors I was using before) to a much better safety razor, a decent boar brush and a decent shave soap. I'll never go back.
