[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Keltec has lost their mind: PR57 5,7 front lock breech top stripper clip feed defensive pistol (Page 4 of 9)

I can see an application besides ban states. My wife purse carries a lot with an integrated holster. Standard mag releases get accidentally engaged with how much shit goes in and out and movement of the purse. So she has used a snub and then an HK with paddle release. But the VP9SK is still a chunk fully loaded. I could see this taking that role: flat, light and no mag to come out on accident. |

Quoted: I want one of their .32s. I think that’s my mom’s carry gun. That aside, I love the ingenuity of new designs. This new 5.7 might not be something I buy, but kudos to Mr. K for trying something out of the box. My ex wife bought me a .32 Keltec to take with me to Florida after Hurricane Wilma (20 years ago). I’ve carried it in my boot, pocket, clipdraw appendix, bouncing around in a fanny pack and it’s always gone bang, dust bunnies, pocket lint and all. Accurate enough for coon head shots at 10 feet. I’ve absolutely no complaints for that little pistol. |
| Everyone is going to be talking about the stripper clip loading and fixed magazine, but I wonder why they chose to go with the odd locking mechanism? I wonder if they’re going to come out with a separate line that uses detachable magazines in the same locking mechanism? |

Quoted: Keltec really reminds me of my uncle that did way too much acid in the 60's and 70's and fried his brain. He comes up with the most outlandish crap, and yet somehow there's a method behind his madness and I find it intriguing. Guess it's time for you to take a trip... |

I wonder if they’re going to come out with a separate line that uses detachable magazines in the same locking mechanism? I would bet it's just cost driven. It's simply less expensive/difficult to machine the internal slide geometry at an exposed end than it is up by the breech face. |

Quoted: Locking system is rotary and reminiscent of the Russian GSH-18. https://photo.weaponsystems.net/image/s-carousel/n-fa_psl_gsh18_m2.jpg/--/img/ws/fa_psl_gsh18_m2.jpg The round slide profile is odd, especially considering it's not concentric with the barrel. The choice to go stripper clip loaded is extraordinarily odd. Between than and the rotary barrel, it does remind one of the Steyr Hahn. Steyr Hahn is what came to mind for me too. I’ve always wanted one and think a stripper clip fed pistol is cool. The stripper clips for this pistol appear to be well designed where the front and rear of the cartridge are supported. I doubt there’s problems with rounds binding up like with some normal steel stripper clips. |

I’ve absolutely no complaints for that little pistol. I pocket carried a P32 while I was in college. It was so small and flat that it pretty much disappeared. I kept it in my left front pocket, despite being right-handed. That way, I could have my left hand in my pocket, on the grip, and most people wouldn't suspect a thing. There'd been a shooting a year or two before outside the building where most of my classes were located, so it wasn't unfathomable that there'd be another, and I wanted to be prepared. Heck, I was in class one evening and my then-girlfriend sent me a text to let me know there'd been a drive-by shooting six houses down from our rental house, less than a mile from campus. A P32 might not have been much gun, but it was better than not having one. Foolishly, I sold it and replaced it with a Diamondback DB9 in order to minimize the number of calibers I stocked. That DB9's trigger ended up snapping off while at the range one evening. I never had that worry with the P32. Personally, I prefered the P32 over the P3AT due to the extra round and the last round slide lock. Sure, they had an issue with rimlock, but that was avoidable either by taking care in loading the mags or by buying the little device marketed to sit at the back of the mag. I also kept FMJ in it because the .32 JHP's of the day weren't really that great. |

Quoted: How does topping off work? Say you've got 8 rounds left from the initial 20, if you jam another 20 round CLIP in will it only go so far or will everything fall apart?GASP!!! Please tell me it goes "PING" and the stripper clip flies out the top!!!! "Their fans have been begging for sub2000 in 45 and 10mm for over a decade. And they ignore that demand." The weight of a bolt/spring combo for 10mm and 45 is prohibitive for s smaller firearm that the sub2000 is designed to be. Plus the barrel would be significantly larger, might require actually reworking the mechanism of folding... |

I like that it is small and lightweight. Actually getting excited about this. Attached File Attached File Attached File |

I really don't understand the fixed mag idea. I don't see how a serious defensive pistol is better with that than a detachable magazine. What if the gun jams and I need to clear it? What if I want to rapidly reload? What if I want to carry extra ammo and not have loose stripper clip things that the rounds are gonna fall out of that are gonna require some weird new mag pouch? What if I want to unload the weapon in a quick and easy way? What if there are issues with the internal magazine that if it were removeable could be fixed by just swapping that mag out? A lightweight 5.7 with a different type of action is vey cool, and viable for self defense. Going out of your way to make it less viable seems dumb, and a standard kel tec move. It is pretty sweet that Kellgren is making a successful life and business out of doing whatever he wants, and I don't think he can be faulted for that. But as a customer it's really annoying watching the way Kel Tec goes about being a gun manufacturer. For the most part it doesn't even really feel like they innovate because their products that should be trendsetting are simply overlooked since they won't take them out of the prototype phase. When the P365 came out if was all the range and game changer and blah blah blah. If someone brought up the fact that keltec built a similiar gun with actually better capacity 20 years before it was written off because that gun sucked, and the p365 shoots well, which is very true. A lot of the trends these days - micro compact pistols, lightweight folding ARs, bufferless ARs, 5.56 and .308 bullpups are markets that kel tec should be a huge player in. But instead of polishing their designs or improving on them, they just move on to tooling up for some other new weird beta project that will never be refined and seems as though kel tec has gone out of their way to make weird and less usable. Kel tec P11, came out it 1995. Imagine if sometime since then they had revamped the ergos, added a slightly longer slide and barrel for a bit more mass and better recoil and improved the trigger, sights, and added an optics cut. it would THE micro compact. And years before anyone else. Instead they scrapped the design, and rebuilt from scratch a different and terrible gun in the P15. In the early 2000s kel tec came out with the SU16 and PLR16. Lightweight bufferless ARs. One as a folding rifle and one as a pistol. Super sick. And honestly just giving them a freaking rail probably could have done wonders to dominate the market where we now see FM15s, Jakls, BRN-180s etc. people are paying up to $1000 for a SCR lower and bcg because the SU16 can't get a stock that isn't a clamshell in 2009 they come out with a decent 308 bullpup - the RFB. In 15 years they couldn't manage to refine it or figure out how to chamber it in a different caliber? Same with RDB (which I have and really like) The bullpup market could belong to the RDB if they just slightly improved the design. And I have to imagine it would be easier to rechamber a barrel than design and tool up for a whole new gun. But no, instead we get what looks like a pretty cool 5.7 pistol that nobody is gonna buy because Kellgren thinks stripper clips are innovative |

Quoted: Other than firing all 20+ rounds, how do you unload it...manually eject each round? Pretty much this. The Grendel P-10 was a pain to unload. Attached File |

Quoted: Can confirm that these run suppressed just fine. Glad I didn’t read the manual about not running a suppressor. ![]() Quoted: Quoted: Quoted: I want something like the CMR in 5.7 as a pistol w/ a folding brace. I'd settle for one in 22 Mag. I wanted a PMR but they say not to suppress it so that's a no go. I suppress mine all the time. It will even run 30 grain suppressed. Can confirm that these run suppressed just fine. Glad I didn’t read the manual about not running a suppressor. ![]() Guns come with manuals?!

I wonder if they’re going to come out with a separate line that uses detachable magazines in the same locking mechanism? I hope they make a version with a detachable mag. The thing looks cool enough, small enough and light enough to make me want one. I think the odd locking mechanism is desirable to reduce bore axis, and the lack of barrel tilting might lead to improved feeding with a long, slender round like the 5.7 (I'm speculating there). JMB invented the rotating-barrel lockup, and it's a really cool idea. I think S&W 5.7-whatever uses a rotating barrel, but I think it's gas-operated, not recoil-operated. At least, that's what I read. |

The grip would be significantly larger if they went with a detachable mag, which would kind of defeat the purpose of a concealed carry pistol (which is what they appear to be marketing this thing as). I think a full sized version with a 6" barrel would be pretty neat. |

in will it only go so far or will everything fall apart?
