It was England's involvement in WWI that put an end to the traditional way of life, with butlers, maids, footmen and stable boys caring for the estate.
The losses in France dried up the manpower pool and to help pay for the war new taxes on the wealthy were imposed, a footman had nothing worth taxing.
The bankers that brokered the loans made out quite well though.

Not just that, the price of labor went up. And then the NHS was established (more taxes there) because they identified a need to have a healthy pool of conscripts.

Inheritance Tax is a trick our .gov learned from the Brits.  The Brits, when they loaded over the Irish, forced them to divide up their estates evenly amongst all of their heirs. This resulted in two things: The first thing was to limit the amount of Irish by lowering the birth rate. The second goal was to perpetually SHRINK every Irish family fortune. With every generation, the value would get lower and lower.

The goal is to prevent anyone on the cusp of being Uber-Rich from getting on the level of these with generational wealth.
