The context and value of such a system is completely lost on people.

They either don't understand it, or alternatively they do and would rather the government provide welfare out of their tax dollars for toothpaste guy than a wealthy person pay them out of pocket to do menial tasks.

Historically, part of the job of the Aristocracy in England was to employ the commoners. The more jobs they provided the more prominent they were and they took the number of staff they employed as a badge of honor and viewed it as serving their community. The fact that someone irons his shoelaces and squeezes his toothpaste onto his toothbrush sounds funny to us as Americans. But the truth is he PAYS people to do that work. Someone's entire living is provided by the King, and if he didn't want his shoelaces ironed or his toothbrush...pasted...then that person would be out of a job.

Like I said, it sounds humorous to us as Americans since we live in a ruggedly individualistic society who would see "servant" as a demeaning role. But as of 2022 the Crown employed 1,133 people. I think the TV show Downton Abbey did a good job showing the dynamics between the Landowners viewing themselves as job providers who are serving their community and their Employees who seem to equally respect and resent them but are ultimately grateful for the employment and who take pride in their work.

The British Monarchy is a relic of the past that preserves the traditions of what "being British" once was. I'm actually astonished that they've found a way to continue on into the modern era as they have and I have respect for that. The British public seem to overwhelmingly be in favor of (or at least have a soft spot for) their Monarchy. Of course in a "progressive society", the traditions and relics of the past MUST be torn down and mocked...it's part of the socialist playbook. And if you can make money from it like this author is trying to do, so much the better. I'm sure that's part of the motivation here.

That said, I'm American...so piss off King Fancypants.

This issue manifests in every minimum wage discussion as well. Our society has priced a lot of traditional basic labor out of the market (or driven it underground, exploiting illegal labor and creating an unquenchable demand signal for illegal immigration).

The Royals, especially the King, live on a level we'll never know. He is the ultimate gentleman and will be as perfect as humanly possible at all times. He learned from his father, who was a hero and great gentleman. Ignorant comments about their habits only expose the low class of the authors.

I do not begrudge the guy. His life was set in stone the day he was born.

Everything I have seen or heard about him that unless he is on official Royal business, he is a pretty smart and down to earth person. He is a prolific reader of just about all subjects great and small and can carry a meaningful conversation with just about anybody regardless of their stature in life. Everything I have read on him from his years in Royal Military service said he was real deal regardless of him being the then future King of England.

As to idiosyncrasies, we all have them, just his are public. If I was the Kind of England, I would ban onions because I hate them and my Throne would be one of those self massage chairs you see at the mall.

So King Charles is a fop.

You should study some of the French kings. They were the best fops!

And The Palace of Versailles was concentrated fops!

No they don't.

They worship Gordon Lightfoot, Gord Downey and Gordie Howe.

I just saw a video from a YouTuber out men biking with two friends when they ran into Charles out on a walk. He was walking alone and chatted with the three men hikers for a few minutes. From the video he seemed to be an affable kind of guy taking time out of his day to speak to his subjects. I’m no fan of royalty of any type but did find the video to be surprising.

I just looked that video up. I didn't really know what to expect because I know literally nothing about the guy other than that he's king, but he did seem pretty down to earth.
