So they gonna fold Ft. Knox up? I mean what is left there other than sending folks through basic? My dad went through there in basic in 69' coldest damn winter he ever spent No Shit! I was a winter cycle back in '81-'82 and walking guard around Holder complex in the snow sucked on more levels than I can explain. BTW, Tanks do INDEED slide on ice.... This is true! I had my first "oh shit" moment as a young PFC driver who hit a patch of ice in our motor pool trying to park. Wheeeeeee! I slid a bradley sideways down a muddy hill..i think I pooped a little. I went through knox in winter...it effin sucked...by the time I graduated it was hot as balls |

I bet you Marines learned a lot more about the M1 than we did. I'm so old that the Marine tankers in D/1-81 were still training on M60’s; they had not transitioned to the M1's yet. A PSG I had started in M60s and he always spoke highly of them. I'd have liked to climb around in one but I never got the chance. |

The weekend I graduated my unit had drill...at Ft Knox. I was excused though.
My PSG and Readiness NCO visted me in basic and mentioned something about deploying to Bosnia, Sinai, or some place called Kosovo, yadda, yadda, yadda in 2004. "That's like 4 years away", I said. And 4 years later we're in Kosovo. Sadly 2004 was the last year my unit did any tank training as OH got rid of most of the tank units, and we became a RSTA unit. No place for tankers, |

I graduated a 19E from Ft. Know back in '86. Sorry to see the shutting it down.
Ironically I was stationed and Ft. Benning (2/69th armor, Kelly hill) right after that. I have heard Benning has changed but I had no idea how much. BTW, do they still have the airborne school, ANCOC/BNCOC, School of the Americas etc. still there? |

I will try to dig them up. 4 or 5 HETTs were wrecked IIRC. One of our M1s was coded out of the system as well. One thing I will tell you is that those hills were the most god damn motivating things in the world to us at the time. It was inspiring to see guys that were literally not with the program, suddenly become "with" the program up those hills. It wasn't just the ones that got their feelings hurt. It was the ones who were just.....*NOT* with the program stepping up and taking a guy's ruck that might have been falling back. 2nd platoon was known as the road marching platoon, and we took it seriously. I remember at one point we were frothing at the mouth to pass up the lead platoon and pace the company home. Some of our guys were carrying THEIR packs from their stragglers. We were literally screaming at our DS to let us pass them. He just held up his index finger and waggled it back and forth. The whole 27 of us felt like we were the complete masters of everything that day. Of course, the reason we were carrying people's packs was that we left one of our stragglers fall back in our eagerness to smoke everyone the road march before, and our DS let us pass the lead platoon and stretch out. We got back early and got to be in the front leaning rest with our rucks on until our straggler made it back. The lesson stuck. We weren't going to let another guy fall behind EVER again. Damn...Good times. |

Sorry to hear about Ft. Knox, my uncle trained there for World War II. I chose Infantry when I returned to the service. Those hills are pretty bad, just be glad you didn't face them everyday like we did in the Infantry. Now I understand why you don't want to dismount from you iron horse. On second thought Bradlys certainly made the Ks go by faster than walking or road marching.
