Only $120 for the Saturn V?!? That's extremely reasonable for a Lego set, particularly one that's nearly 2k pieces and stands 3ft tall when finished.

As said, on backorder, but I placed an order anyway.

Thanks. I don't really need it now, though, I'm happy to wait until LEGO.com has more in.

Still, good advice for those that do want one right now.

They made parts count by not giving the astronauts bad ass gold mirrored helmets like they used to have.

Do want though.

Nice!

What really sold me on this set, besides the very reasonable price, is the fact that it's not just the rocket, it's basically the entire Apollo program in a box. Command module, LEM, all three stages, all present and work like they're supposed to. You can replicate the entire mission from launch to moon landing to return to Earth and splashdown. Very cool and useful for explaining how the whole thing worked!

ETA: Just noticed that the creators of this set have a proposal for a same-scale Crawler to go with it that they'll be submitting this fall! That would make it even better.

Nice. Still, given the price, I'm willing to accept some corner cutting in the name of getting a production model available.

Looks like they quit taking orders until stock catches up.

They sent me a "your order will take longer to complete" email this morning and status went from awaiting new stock to backordered. We shall see how long it takes. I'm not bothered, I'm a patient person.

Oh I don't want to wait but I will.  I would feel stupid in a month or so when they are everywhere for MSRP.  Just hope it doesn't end up being like .22 ammo or the original WII where you had to wait at the stores in the AM before they opened hoping to score.  I can see this going that way.  Especially if they plan to release the crawler/launch pad later on.  I'd have to have those as well.

It should settle back down in about the month or so. The flippers are buying them all up reason why Lego keeps selling them out so fast. If you look on the e-bay some of the flippers have up to 5 of them up for sale.

I've been meaning to catch back up on this thread.

Walked into the Lego store here in town on the 1st and picked it up, and built it over the next couple days.  It is super cool, although popping the first stage off of the rest does carry a hazard of inadvertently causing second stage separation as well if you're not careful.  The mission was a catastrophic failure the first time I tried that, as S-IVB and the lunar modules crashed to Earth.  Repairs were swift, though.

I kind of wish they'd included a second LM, so you could have one on display on the "moon surface", and one properly tucked away inside the rocket.

It came with four astronaut micro-figures, I gave one to my son.

This is one of those cases where the answer is "it depends".

The majority of LEGO sets are indeed intended for children. They're not difficult to build and often have licenses that kids will find interesting- Star Wars, Minecraft, etc.

This set is a clear exception, however - the price tag, complexity of build*, subject (I don't know too many kids that care much about the Apollo missions - sad, but there it is) and level of detail of this set put it clearly in the adult space program fan category. The 14+ age recommendation on the box pretty much confirms that.

*This is, by far, the most complex build I've ever seen LEGO do; experienced builders will take several hours on this one. Not kid friendly at all.

Think of it as a model kit. These days most model kits are purchased and built by adults who appreciate the subject and have the time/disposable income/focus/attention to detail to complete one.

Aside from that, LEGOs hit the market in 1960. So most every person born after 1955 has played with LEGOs and has a nostalgia for them.

i build some sets on a Dr's recommendation to help keep my dexterity in my hands and fingers and help with my fine motor skills, i mostly build the different car sets and will give them to the boy when he is old enough
i ordered the kit in this thread as i like the history of what it is and just think its awesome

For me, it's a few different things. Nostalgia is one. I'm 26 now and Legos were my favorite as a kid. I haven't gotten a new Lego set in over 10 years, however. This past year I have been getting a few complicated sets because I like the nostalgia and I like the subject matter.

The complicated sets display nice, also. When I was a kid, all the sets were almost immediately busted up and tossed into the "Lego bin" to build whatever.

Plus, there is a calming effect on me when I'm building.

ETA Plus! Saturn V is just cool!
