With the data linking lots of things would be shooting to defend a vessel. Phalanx and Sea RAM are much better systems than anything Russia has at sea right now. More laser CIWS are getting pushed into the fleet too. The key is our ships operating in a condition ready to defend itself. |

The Vietnam war ended in 1975. Nearly 50 years ago. And all the thousands of M113s we still have? They are so worthless to our military that we dump them into the ocean for fish-reefs. But, each worthless M113 is "valued" at hundreds of thousands of dollars, each. It takes something like 5% of the energy required to create virgin aluminum to recycle it. Money for that would come from a different budget. This group is getting money to do this thing instead. You're right. There should be much more salvage value in the hulls than wasting them this way, and indeed a private company not constrained by a contrary regulation or tax policy probably would salvage them. There won't be anymore cheap / easy Iraq style battles / victories for the USA in the future, no tank vs tank battles, just endless bloody fights where cheap drones controlled from a mile / 100 miles / 1000 miles by a operator, or controlled totally by AI blow people up while shitting, eating, typing paperwork, dropped into your head, flown thru your window, sneak in and destroy entire fuel depots, ammo dumps, hospitals, factories, etc, and especially when combined with AI, we won't fare any better against this type shit than the Russians have. Biden admin really gave away some intel here. That we have drones that are landing or at least going to final approach autonomously, because if there was a man in the loop they would know exactly where that drone was in relation to what they were observing. Reminds me of the Bismarck.
Advanced AA guns for fast fighters/bombers. Gets disabled by slow biplanes. There is an Achilles heel with our navy too. We’ll find out one day. |

Quoted: You sure about that? It comes down to cost. How much money can we put into a defensive system that has to stop 100+ drones at once? Drones are cheap. They don't have to spend a lot of money on them as they are a one time use item. Strap explosives on it and send it on it's way. 100,200, 1000? They could spend $100,000 on a drone swarm and overwhelm ship defenses pretty easily. How do you defend from 1,000 incoming drones? You're going to run out of ammo trying to shoot them all down. Then what? The next round gets through. You're fucked. The only way to combat this is retaliatory strikes that are so over the top that even the hardened terrorists are like, woah, we done fucked up. Precision strikes don't do anything. It needs to be like WW2 bombing campaigns where entire cities are razed. Make them reconsider the error of their ways. View Quote Swarming has long been an effective tactic for swamping ship defenses. |

Quoted: So we need to use our advantage by delivering massive precision strikes to the countries that fund the asymmetric action. We know who they are, where they are, and when they can be had. View Quote Being on the periphery (EXTREMELY on the periphery, providing a service that's needed, but not even close to intrinsic to "drone killing" world) for well over 10 years (way, way over) I'd add this: cubic millions have been spent by private armament companies in the effort to kill large numbers of drones (cause the money to be made with a system that can do that is enormous). I get to see only a tiny, tiny bit, I have to leave the property at some point, but the US has anti drone capabilities that are closely guarded and will only come to light when put to use. Assuming that we're blind, unprepared and inept in this area is a grand mistake. And these efforts include joining existing tech (old school gunnery) with new software up to new tech that's unknown to you and me. It's an across the board all weapons on deck effort. This has been a well identified threat for many years, stupidly large work has been done to counter it. The UK/Russia, the middle east bump ups, only add data that helps not hurts that ongoing effort. |
