Thank God they ditched the OS controlled plugs in our area.

Of course they left the economizer requirements for the HVAC systems.

Parts from China for a building automation system are the problem…

How about just going with occupancy sensors in each room that are independent of each other like every other commercial building?

Hmmmm, my spider sense says someone got screwed on the job and withheld the 'as built' drawing.  That person is now laughing in his/her/its beer.

I’m betting if the lights didn’t come back in you’d see some pretty quick solutions.

You’d be surprised. I’m an electrical maint manager and We have 5 sites locally and 10 sites globally with the same smart lighting system. They have already moved to a version 2.0 interface and version 1 that is less than 10 years old is unsupported. We’ve been though 12 massive firmware updates since last year. Lights are supposed to fail on but we’ve had issues where they fail off and it’s a massive pain in the dick short of ripping the controls out completely. We have weekly meetings with our client and the manufacture for the last 7 months to get this resolved and I don’t think it ever will be.

Controls on our system are all local and communicate to a main brain via a mesh network. We have a 700,000 square foot site that wouldn’t turn off for a few months and it was dozens upon doezens of breakers that feed lights, not just one main switch that can power it

I bet if someone told them that the electricity wants to transition from male to female, the school board would find a way to cut it off.

You do know there IS no breaker panel?

The software takes the place of that.

It's not THAT simple.

Exactly.  Idiots. Just flip the main breaker each night.

And I am a plumber!

Ehh, maybe. If it’s software driven that might just cause more issues.

That’s kinda what I was thinking.

Stupid on their part to not at least have it as a backup. Typical.

I call bullshit on that.

That would be a huge problem if there was an emergency and the power needed to be shut down RFN.

It might cause problems with the system that isn't working now, but there is a breaker system before the computer lighting crap.

Some pimply nerd right at that school could probably fix that software, or even replace it.

Just 15-seconds of reading the article.

"And, when possible, teachers have manually removed bulbs from fixtures in classrooms while staffers have shut off breakers not connected to the main system to douse some of the exterior lights."

I work high school maintenance. My building was built in the late 70's. All the lights for every area have their own panel. Separate panel for receptacles. I find it extremely difficult to believe they "cannot shut them off". We have building automation too. Guess what? YOU CAN MANUALLY OVERRIDE EVERYTHING!!!!

I'm pretty sure their area's electrical code is virtually the same as ours.  There are breakers, and yes they don't care because it's not their money.

Lol.

Sounds like reverse logic control.  Signal from controller goes out? Lights turn on.

It’s probably a huge clusterfuck and they have requirements for lighting that make it more difficult than simply bypassing everything.

I guarantee there is a breaker or three that would shut the whole thing down and still leave other items on.

Plus call the software company's tech support and get them to fix their freshly installed stuff that just failed.

That is another "WTF?" I don't know about that school, but at mine we don't let teachers use our ladders. They also have no access to the panels. Damn principal cant even get into the mechanical rooms.

I'm an electrician.  Here's a couple 3000A pics I just took just for this thread. I'm glad the dude who said there's no breaker panel got dogpiled lol. I guess all those 277V lights have zero overcurrent or ground fault protection huh. No means to lock out either.

I will come and get the lights to turn off for HALF of what they cost to run per year.

The problem is that its costing the taxpayer money not the people in charge. Take the money out of their pocket and it would be fixed tomorrow.
