They have a difficult time balancing viewing access to the public. budget, and collection preservation. High dollar items usually are behind a clear enclosed display, but many are set out on a stand due to budget or viewing reasons. Ideally the air inside a museum is filtered and temperature/humidity controlled to minimize dust and item preservation, which is incredibly expensive. I just watched a short on the steps they took to preserve and display Niel Armstrong's suit. The suit has internal airflow (nitrogen I believe) and temperature/humidity control to help preserve it.
