A hunter camping in central Idaho woke up when a black bear started biting his head, and he couldn't get medical care for three days because he was in such a remote wilderness area. Idaho Fish and Game officials said in a statement Wednesday that 29-year-old Stephen Vouch of Boise had been hunting bighorn sheep with friends and awoke to the attack at 2 a.m. Friday. Vouch yelled, and one of his friends shot the young male bear with a .45-caliber handgun. Vouch then shot and killed the wounded bear when it climbed a tree. Vouch received first aid, then the hunting group rafted downstream before flying out of the rugged Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness on Sunday. He was treated Monday at a hospital for cuts to his head and released. |

A bear(most likely black) sniffed my head when I was backpacking in Colorado.
Woke up and drew down...,he ran off. |

Went right back to sleep. When we got up in the morning it had beaten a path around the tent to bare dirt. Must have circled us all night. |

If it didn't kill him, it was just tasting.
It's kinda like licking an icecream cone before digging into it. |

When I Bow hunt elk each year there's always someone in the hunting party who thinks it's funny that I always wear a .41 or .44 magnum when we head out.

460xvr...and when you run out of ammo, just throw the revolver.

Damn bears ONLY bother me when I try to poop. They are brilliant assholes. Go on... I was on a trip (15 days backpacking in NM) where people talked about bears, hung bear bags, bear this, bear that. We never saw any bears. Until I dug a hole, and squatted over it. THEN a bear shows up. I didn't fill in the hole. Sue me. |

I live in a forest in bum fuck egypt and I have never seen so many bears as this year. And they are really moving looking for food in a tough year. Think I should carry more than a p3at??

I wonder wihat a headshot from a 1911 loaded with 185s would do to a black bear.

Black Bears are assholes. I had a 600 lber sneaking up behind me while taking a piss at work in AK, If a buddy hadnt called out to me I would have never heard the damn thing. I turned around really fast, pulled out my pocket knife and flared out as big as I could. Scary, this was a big bear and it was a problem bear, charged 5 people already. As soon as hunting season opened up and there was no paperwork to do for shooting a problem bear that fucker got greased. TIpped the scales at just over 600.
Like many places the black bear population is bordering on out of control. Alaska wonders why their moose population is declining when theres all these black bears running around eating calves the minute they fall out of mom. One unit got it right when they had no tags or bag limits on black bears for a year, the following year the moose population shot through the roof. I guess long story short, If you arent going to get in trouble for it, I wouldnt hesitate to pop a black bear. |

I need to save this story for all the dipshits I hear say that black bears are harmless.

When I say I "woke up and drew down".....think about that in the slowest possible way. And it wasn't because I was being "stealth" or "tactical".......I was basically "altitude drunk". I slept too high on the mountain that night (just under 12,500..and with the temp drop the actual O2 level was even lower) and was going hypoxic. I actually thought it might have been a dream until I found the prints in the morning. |

I wonder wihat a headshot from a 1911 loaded with 185s would do to a black bear. Piss the bear off. This. A 185 in .45acp doesn't have a lot of sectional density and will likely yield poor penetration. When dealing with dangerous pissed off animals that want to kill you, you need penetration to increase your chances of hitting the central nervous system to shut them down. |

Why did they feel the need to bring the color of the bear into it and specify it was a BLACK bear??
