Actually, during the negotiations and run-up to the elections, there was a greater danger of a civil war between the Zulu nationalists (Inkatha Freedom Party) and the ANC, than there was between the ANC and the Afrikaaner nationalists.  The Zulus and the ANC were blowing each other up left and right. The Inkatha Freedom party was trying to secure more rights for the Zulus on their home territory on the Eastern Coast of ZA (Durban, Natal Province).

The ANC was founded by academics.  Blacks, whites, indians.  Tribal differences were not really something that the ANC was used to dealing with, as tribalism was kept out of the party mechanics for the most part until very recently.  Now that Mandela, and his successor Thabo Mbeki is out, tribal-oriented non-academics are in control, and things are getting squrrely very fast.

Basically the power went from dealing with a bunch of grumpy college professors to dealing with a bunch of OWS punks with machineguns and armorued benzes.  The ANC was always a bunch of commie faggots, but now they are a bunch of commie, gangster faggots that are eyeing each other up on tribal grounds.

And then the Zulus took over the ANC.

The successive prime ministers really got down to redistribution with forced BEE job programs too.  Essentially "hire 10 useless uneducated people before you can hire one qualified person"  Now the fuckers are threatening to nationalize the mines and other stupid shit.

Yes. But they worked a job.   A lot of "make work" type jobs, but nobody got paid for sitting at home and doing nothing like the American welfare system is.

They got a lot of nice infrastructure and monuments out of it.  Now all the out of work blacks and white people too poor to leave can look back at the crumbling monuments and think of the good old days.

There was a labor shortage most of the time due to conscription into the SADF anyways.

I do believe Mandela has done one thing right. Honestly I think the deaths post white rule in South Africa would be insane had he not been involved. The 80's were a really heightened time of tension between white and black. In a weird way he's played a positive role although it's not perfect. That being said his wife is fucking scary and a major racist. His true beliefs are just beneath the surface but I think his time in jail sobered him some.
