Love your posts.

Doing an ice rescue refresher class tomorrow.  Not excited, it's always super cold.

More pics!

Continued success and great adventures to you Marie, from a former (PADI ctf'. in 1970) mid-west diver who has been under the ice a few times his-own-self.

Gave it up when I outgrew the wetsuit I bought as a teen and after I dove Cozumel and Roatan.  Told myself I never wanted to dive cold water again.  That was a long time ago and I've kept that promise to myself ever since.

Always enjoy your threads and look forward to more!

Hi @Marie,
How thick is the ice and is it smooth on the underside?
TIA,
Rob

@robmkivseries70

On the third dive yesterday, I felt the underside of the ice. Not smooth!

Those pics give me anxiety. Like the guy that swims under the ice holding his breath. No thanks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBxxVHdpCwU

Marie,
 How many knives do you carry when diving?

Years ago, I was helping out at a youth outdoor field day: hunting, fishing, shooting, trapping, etc

Anyway, was talking to some of the other instructors afterwards, and noticed the guy who was teaching outdoor survival was wearing a number of knives.

When I asked him about it, he showed me a couple more!

I asked why so many, and he told me he used to be a rescue/ recovery diver 20 years ago.

He was diving in a muddy creek off the Mississippi, and got hung up on something. Pulled and felt something sharp dig into his back/ shoulder. Couldn't reach it, so tried to turn around. Turned some more and felt something dig into him in his other side.

Started to panic, then realized it was a catfish trotline, heavy tarred line. Tried to cut his way out and dropped his knife. Tried pulling some slack but was tangled in some trees. Changed directions and got enough slack to get shallow enough to get his head out of the water, and tender came over and cut him loose.

Said ever since, he has carried a LOT of knives!

Again, really enjoy your dive threads.
I spend a LOT of time on the water, used to be my job.
But try NOT to spend any time IN the water, LOL.

I usually carry 2, plus a pair of EMT shears.

There's a tiny, serrated sawed-off steak knife in a sheath on my waist (blade length maybe 1.5-inches), and a small pointy knife (maybe a 1-inch blade?) integrated into the handle on my dive light.  Both will cut through most entanglement hazards easily and quickly.

"Dive swords" are about useless underwater and are more for showing off.  A tiny, sharp knife is usually plenty, and if that can't get it, the EMT shears can handle it.

Fuck that, I only scuba in the tropics. Farthest North I'm willing to go is Hilton Head.

Why did you wait till spring? You should have gone when it was cold.

@KingRat

We had to wait until there was ice! Seriously, we don’t think there would have been thick enough ice without the February cold snap. This dive shop usually does two weekends of ice diving the last weekend in Feb/first weekend of March.
