Haha, I guess I’m going to be one of the dumb asses that ignores GD’s conventional wisdom.  Those people really annoy the crap out of me, but its always super satisfying when it blows up in their face.

Now I fully expect, like nearly 100% sure, that the repair bill will be substantially more than they think it will be.  And I also believe it’s likely they will not end up paying out of pocket and I’ll have to go through insurance.  Guys I get it.   But how am I any worse off by giving the guy a day to settle up out of pocket before filing a claim?  I'm going to be seeing this family at my kids school, their sports, the grocery store, etc for years to come.   If the dude gets termed and I didn't give him a small chance to come through, it's going to make for some next level awkwardness that I can really do without ... I think one of their kids even played on my sons soccer team a year or two back.

Edit: Dealer is going to look at it tomorrow morning

I got rear ended and got a check to fix my beater. Cashed it and blew it on a home stereo. Turns out the lady that hit me lived next door to the house I was renting. She had to look at my smashed up car every day while listening to Motley Crue at full volume.

Get his check then bolt on a 2x6

My truck has been rear-ended twice since I bought it.  One time was $5400 and the second was $4600.  Unfortunately, it was left side both times so I got a new left bedside.  I need my right side bed fixed due to shitty GM buckling.

This is on a 2011 Silverado too.

UPDATE!  Body shop won't know for sure until they start the work, and they stressed that more damage could come up when they get in to it. Estimator right away said the bumper and bumper brackets are toast, can't be fixed.  Exhaust doesn't look good, left tail pipe is way off, and they sent me to a subcontractor to evaluate exhaust.  Sub says we should be able to fix it with a few hours of labor, probably no need to get replacement parts (new replacement exhaust would almost exactly double the repair cost).

I sent the at-fault party the estimate. They replied, we still want to cover the repair cost out of pocket, in cash, and they can meet him at his work tomorrow morning  Seems like its one of those rare circumstances that everyone comes out OK.  Body shop says it will take 2 days to fix - normally I'd get a rental covered, but I'll let that slide and get by for a few days carpooling with the wife.  Easily worth the less than expected drama.  You guys had me a little worried!  Really glad I trusted my gut though.   No worries doomers, this could still blow up in my face.

Go to a body shop and get a proper estimate FFS.

Chances are there's more than just your bumper that's damaged.

I don't follow.  These guys have been in business since 1930, the best reputation around, and I've used them for repairs for the last 10 years.  My truck was examined at for around 2 hours today, by 3 different people, on a lift for at least half the time - but probably more.

You should look at an aftermarket bumper. Will probably be cheaper too.

OP needs to flip this into an opportunity.

Get a quote for $1600 from a body shop, get cash from other driver. Get a nice rear Rough Country bumper for $600. Spend the other $1000 on a new gun.

You don't have the cash yet.  I wouldn't get too cocky until your truck is repaired and you are whole.

You've also lost money due to your truck being in a crash and now being worth less.  You haven't asked for depreciation have you?

Since the at-fault party doesn't want to go through insurance, I don't think this will pop on a carfax ... Maybe I'm wrong?  I don't think so though.  This might actually work out for me even better than I though.

You can tell them not to send anything to scamfax. I told the shop that repaired the sliding door on the van (was moms at the time) not to send it to scamfax. They said no problem. COnsidering how many suv's and trucks I've looked at that had a "clean carfax" had been in a collision. One Grand Cherokee I found had a weld on pull tab still attached in the lot.

@Rob940

Thanks man, I wouldn't have thought to tell them that.  Figured it was only reported by insurance companies.

Well that sucks but want I want to know is what they are going to do if you aren't wearing a mask? Refuse to take your kid?
Or LOL refuse to give you your kid at the end of the day?!

I was wondering why in the hell it matters. I presume that each of those parents spend time unmasked with the kids at home.

I'm still stuck on the fact that you're wearing a fucking mask in your car on the school's grounds.

For fucks sakes.  That is fucking pathetic.

Update!  My wife and I had Friday off, and we arrive at his work.  Didn't know what to expect, but it tuned out awesome!  He is the business owner (why complain its a company truck at the accident scene when you are the owner?).   Anyway, it was a nice show room with 3 warehouses on the property.  We got a 30 minute tour, and just saying, I was a bit envious.  Around 6 employees there at the time.  He paid my estimate in cash and was super thankful for not involving insurance.  Haha, I left feeling a little dumb - he asked me if I drank beer, and I thought he was  asking if I want a beer.  This was 9am in the morning, and I was like, thanks, but I'm good.   He laughed and was like 'I'm not offering you a beer'!  And then gave me company logo-ed beer mug and baseball hat (also got my wife coffee cup).  Turned out as good as it could have, for going to collect accident repair cash from someone that hit your car and didn't want to go though insurance.

... Take it to a couple shops and get quotes. Forward to the other guy. Give him a day then go through insurance when he doesn't pay.

Happened to my wife.
Guy was, " that's too much money!".
OEM parts, I'd do the work . So ZERO labor.
Was less than $300.

Get a repair quote from the bodyshop.

If the bumper is that mangled, what else is messed up underneath/behind it?

All very good points.

Got me thinking about my company's vehicles too (cargo, not POV). As per the insurance policy IIRC any time a company truck is involved in an accident they HAVE to get a police report.  Either they've been screwed over a few times by people who don't pay or have coverage etc... or the insurance company has seen enough of it to make it a requirement.

This happened to me once. It was at a stoplight. Some kid was messing with his phone and ran into me. It didn’t do a ton of damage but it was around $900 worth. I called the cops right there and he got a ticket. He wanted to not go through insurance because he was driving his girlfriend’s car and he was getting ready to get an apartment with her. I gave him a few weeks. He was texting me back and forth during that time. Once I took pictures of the two different quotes I got he stopped texting me back. I filed a claim with his insurance and they paid. Little bastard tried to not pay.

ETA: you should probably have called the cops so they could have sited him and at least got his insurance information in case he doesn’t end up paying.

ETA: The same thing happened to my dad once. He had his Camaro for about a month and a guy barely hit him at a stop light. The guy didn’t want to get insurance involved and for whatever reason the quote was like 2k. The guy thought my dad was trying to rip him off so they just turned it into insurance and they paid. The thing is the car was brand new (when they where first released about 10 years ago) and it had broken something behind the bumper cover so all of it had to be replaced.

How does one just “get a police report” when the police refuse to respond to accidents?

In St Louis they won’t even dispatch an officer if your car is stolen.  Much less a fender bender
