AccuWeather meteorologists are tracking several large clouds of dust from Africa's Sahara Desert that are currently drifting over the Atlantic Ocean. The immense clouds have the potential to traverse the entire ocean and reduce air quality across the Caribbean and the southeastern United States in the coming days.

The Saharan dust is so dense and widespread that it could be seen from space on Thursday. NOAA's GOES-EAST weather satellite spotted the first cloud of dust over the eastern Caribbean Sea and the Lesser Antilles, with an even bigger plume of dust emerging off the coast of Africa.

On the plus side, the dust clouds usually hinder any tropical storm development...

I was on a photo shoot in the Caribbean when one of these events happened.  No blue skies for two weeks, just gray like smog

Maybe the dust will dim the sky and cool us off.

Gots outside stuff that needs done.

It comes every year. Some years are worse than others but it is mostly meaningless.

Most people are not aware (because it is normal) of the Haze they live in, in any urban or near urban area.

Because of that, this is usually not even noticeable.  However, some years it sure turns the sky an unusual and very noticeable shade of tan.  This can make for interesting sunlight and sunsets.

Ah yes. Great point.  This does indeed moderate or prevent hurricanes.

Don't hold your breath. Strong possibility it will arrive late or procrastinate in getting here. Hell chances are it will never get here. A strong front may lock it up and never see the day of light.

This is normal and happens every year. We look forward to it because it dries out the air and stops the rain in FL for a weekend.

I used to inspect yachts under construction in Italy. That dust was ruinous to yachts outside because it would stain the white exterior caulking orange. The builder would often have to reef it out and do it again if it was bad enough.

I initially read the title as, “Massive African Studies crowd to impact United States”, and thought it was a commentary on the growth of that degree field. I didn’t realize it was that large of a degree field, nor that it could impact the whole country. Then I realized I read it wrong.

It is hard to imagine conditions in Haiti getting worse.
But, they just did.

The much thicker dust cloud is behind this one -

It is nothing like that. Just a tiny bit of haze in the air and drier air.
