The pervasive attitude in Montana at the moment is that the "rich" land owners need to pay more for everything, because the "Townies" are getting shafted with high rent prices in the towns because of the influx of all the people.
Too many people are coming here and there isn't enough infrastructure or housing as it is. Those people have more money than the bottom level locals, so they are being squeezed. Everyone who comes here has all these ideas on how to fix everything and the first thing to do is start taxing everything and pouring that money back into the local city governments. Well as you can imagine, it's a mess, they can't build roads, homes, streets, sewers, etc fast enough. Right now there are probably 100 major building projects in Bozeman/Belgrade not to mention probably 500 homes, apt buildings, condos, going up as well. 20,000 more people by 2030. |

Our property taxes (For the most part) get locked when an owner turns 65. Last year, property owners finally got some relief from the criminal property appraisers via a statewide vote. We got a 60% reduction.

Quoted: A senior from Montana has delivered a viral speech about the sorry state of property taxes in the Treasure State. "I'm on Social Security, I'm 68-years-old and working just to pay my taxes," says Kurt, in a clip shared on TikTok by Ryan Busse, who is running to be the next governor of Montana. Kurt claims that over the last couple of years, his annual property taxes have soared from $895 to almost $8,000 an increase of around 790% which he says is like paying almost "$700 a month rent to the state to live in our own house." The state has an Elderly Homeowner/Renter Tax Credit, and the maximum credit is $1,150. "There needs to be a moratorium on what we have to pay," he says, adding that he's had to continue working into what should be his retirement golden years to cover his mounting property costs. "I'm stubborn enough [that] I don't want to dig into my bank account to pay them." Kurt is one of thousands of Montana homeowners suffering sticker shock over recent property tax hikes. He says: "We just can't take this anymore. This was a great place and it still is, but the people that made it great can't afford to live here anymore." https://s.yimg.com/ny/api/res/1.2/wDneLFHlVowOoW0POBC7HQ--/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTQyNztjZj13ZWJw/https://media.zenfs.com/en/moneywise_327/ae5d1ddd54646912bb9937ab1e0f8996 View Quote moar View Quote Should be illegal to jack up property taxes post purchase on primary residences. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted: Quoted: Just wait until some California transplant tells him how they levied property tax on senior citizens back home. My buddy says: "Not since 1978. Prop 13 and the ballot initiative process is some of what Cali got right." That’s my point. It’s mentioned quite often here that CA transplants in particular are always bringing their politics with them wherever they return to. This may be the one thing CA got right. Example. My grandfather bought his place on 5 acres around 1980 for 250k. Shortly after purchased bordering 10 acres for another 60k. It’s currently assessed at 450k and has a $4500 tax bill. My cousin listed it for 4.1 million. That would be a $41,000 annual property tax bill if not for prop 13 which would drive most out. |

California doesn't do much right nowadays, but they had Prop. 13 about 40 years ago. It puts a limit on prop tax increases.
Montucky needs Prop. 13. So does Texas. |

The purpose of the higher property taxes is to force you to have to sell.
If you won't move on your own, they'll take it by force when you fail to pay. |

She said it's nearly impossible to get that exemption, unless you're a 100% disabled, non-ambulatory vet. They need to do what other states and Michigan have done. Your property gets homesteaded and it can never go up more than 2% a year and it can also go down. I pay the same amount of property taxes on my house that I did in 1996. And I'm still against property taxes, because you never really own your home in property

Quoted: If you've lived & worked in a state and paid taxes for X number of years, let's say over 10 years, your property taxes should cease if you're 65 or older. Gov't plans to tax you into homelessness to make room for the tax revenue producer. If you aren't a producer, they prefer that you either leave or die. That's an actual fact, they see you as a financial liability otherwise. View Quote Property taxes should be locked in at the time of sale. |

So if you take money you were taxed on when you earned it and spend it to improve your property it's now worth more and the gvt taxed you even more so you can have the pleasure of living there.
