Quoted: The Mist. Its peak optimism starts at below sea level and takes a sharp downhill cliff from there, whereupon the ending pretty much leaves you in a depressive black hole. Even more surprising, its a stephen king franchise where his book actually ended on a more positive note. View Quote ETA: To me the movie ending seemed too, I don't know, (gimmicky?). The open ending of the book was more of a mind fuck to me but I could see where it wouldn't go over well with movie goers. |

Bone Tomahawk
Green Inferno Irreversible Martyrs Any of the SAW movies I used to include John Carpenter's The Thing on the list, but I've seen it so many times now it doesn't have the shock value anymore. |

There was a lot of them but the one that really was disturbing to me was Citizen X .

Bad boy bubby was fun.
The only mainstream movie that really fucked with me was se7en. I thi k it was the first movie I had ever seen in the theater that didn't have a happy ending or at least some closure. It fucked with my head. |

Not as messed up as a lot of what's been posted, but The Sadness was a bit disturbing. Basically 28 Days Later/Train to Busan, with horny rapist zombies.

Haven't seen it mentioned but The Divide was a fairly disturbing film. Thought it was cool that it had Michael Biehn in it.

Message in a Bottle. Romantic movie with a nihilistic-ish ending. Worst date movie ever.

The Act of Killing is pretty fucked up. It's a documentary about the genocide in Indonesia which many do not know about. It is recreated with musical numbers directed by the actual general who carried out the genocides. I shit you not.
The Act of Killing - Official Trailer In the Company of Men is about two guys who play a mean joke on a deaf girl by pretending to date her and then dumping her at the same time. Supposidly it almost got an NC-17 rating despite having no sex or violence in it. One of Aaron Eckhart's first roles to boot. In The Company Of Men Trailer 1997 This one goes to some pretty interesting places you might not expect. Three Identical Strangers Trailer #1 (2018) | Movieclips Indie Deliver Us From Evil. Quoted: M - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/M_ M is a 1931 German thriller film directed by Fritz Lang and starring Peter Lorre in his breakthrough role as Hans Beckert, a serial killer of children. An early example of a procedural drama, the film centers on the manhunt for Lorre's character, conducted by both the police and the criminal underworld. --- View Quote I wanted to see this back in the 90s but Blockbuster didn't have it. I called their 1-800 number and the lady helped me find a location that had a copy of it. I was on the phone for about twenty minutes with her because doing a key word search for "M" yielded a lot of results. Key word search wasn't what it is today, but we found it! |

Quoted: Funky Forest, just an absolutely bizarre japanese film. View Quote Serbian Film and August Underground, as mentioned itt already. I'll add: -Splatter: Naked Blood -The Holy Mountain -Who's Watching Oliver to the list. Sounds like there's some more movies I need to see though. |

To me, there can't be a good answer to the question 'why was this film made?" A Serbian Film, while pretty fucked up on the surface, was made that way intentionally to mock Serbia's official attitude towards film (hence the name).
Most David Lynch movies are this way because he's completely insane. Irreversible is another that should never have been written or produced. Kids was extremely nihilistic. Just dark and seemed to represent a complete lack of concern for humanity. |

Quoted: Pink Flamingos is the first one that comes to mind...especially the final scene. View Quote I wasn't going to read six pages to see if Pink Flamingos was mentioned...and didn't have to. John Waters writing and directing Divine was never going to produce anything short of degeneracy. |

Happiness (1988) - Check it out, will not disappoint. Or maybe it will? |

Just thought of a couple very good movies but they are dark..
Frailty with Bill Paxton. Great plot twists. Horrible dark themes. The Savior with Denis Quaid. Very excellent capture of the Serb Croat war and its toll on the people there. |

Irreversible: because fire extinguisher scene and 10 min long rape of Monica Bellucci.
One viewing was enough |

I teach film. I have seen pretty much every film mentioned in this thread. Although some were disturbing, and despite Pink Flamingos having some funny moments, it is the only film that has physically made me dry heave. For a film that is a fictional tale about one-upmanship by doing disgusting things, Waters and Divine finally got me in the end with their documentary moment. |

The acting is excellent. It is a very sobering film for sure. Noe is very controversial but he makes bold choices as a director and I appreciate that about him. |

Quoted: Most of those listed here are essentially mainstream in the film world. They’re are widely available and many on streaming services. Really transgressive, disturbing stuff is hard to get for a reason. Sure, Serbian Film is gross, but it’s a slick, mid-tier drama with one truly gross-out scene. Same with Martyrs. Passolini’s Salo is a bit closer to true transgressive cinema. It’s widely available because Criterion loves it. My stomach can take allot, so not much phases me as long as it’s fiction. The closest things I’ve seen were Men Behind the Sun about Japanese torture in WWII and the Guinea Pig series, which included a fake snuff film that is pretty realistic - so much so that Charlie Sheen (I think) reported it to the FBI. Merhige’s Begotten is pretty nuts. It’s on YouTube. View Quote Agreed. I suggest Tumbling Doll of Flesh for anyone looking to truly test their limits. |

Quoted: For me, Jacob's Ladder. I really think I felt almost suicidal when it finished. It put the hook in me like nothing ever will again. Lots of heavy thoughts about religion, afterlife, etc. I'm not going to give away spoilers, but if you haven't seen it, see it. It's for me a movie I love to hate in a way. Honorable mention goes to The Road. I was prepared however as I had just read the book, which is even worse. List yours if you will. View Quote Salo. That movie is all kinds of fucked up. The day I saw Jacob's Ladder I had been in a motorcycle accident. Picked it up on the way home from the hospital. Needless to say when it got to the end and you realize his whole life after Vietnam was all in his head as he was dying on an operating table during the war, it fucked me up a bit. Spent about an hour convinced I was dying on the road the movie was my message to let go. |

Quoted: Devil's Rejects. But I generally don't watch those types of flicks so maybe it wasnt that bad. Ending was interesting though. Gives Freebird a whole new meaning. I just watched a movie on Netflix (I think, might've been Prime), called, "Dragon Day".
Impossible to believe anyone in a position like the main protagonist could be so unprepared/stupid. The premise was good/prescient though and it definitely had potential. |
