I mostly agree with that statement, but the real nail in the coffin was in 2007 when the CoT came out.  Sport has never been the same since.  I miss the big horsepower, hand crafted and hand painted Cup cars.  I miss having drivers I could look up to as well.  Real alpha types used to pilot those dangerous cars at 200+ mph.  I really want to like the next gen car but just cant

One could also argue restrictor plates, but Dale even made that fun. So yes, I agree. Him dying ended it for me anyway.

Alpha types?. Lolz
They're just dudes driving a car in circles.
Anyone could do it with one arm out the window, smokin a Marlboro.
I could drive those circles with a Frappuccino in the cup holder and one hand full of avocado toast.

When they stopped having OEM chrome bumpers and sheet metal.  So... sometime in the late 80's.

Now the drag racing is pathetic. I mean...a straight line.
I could probably do it blindfolded, while listening to a podcast.

I used to be a huge fan. But I haven’t watched in years. Davey Allison was my favorite driver. I was so upset when he died.

I honestly don’t even understand the goofy scoring system anymore.

NASCAR died for me when they started allowing silhouette cars in the 80s. Up until then they were actually based on stock cars. After that, they just looked like they were based on stock cars.

I tried to hold on after Dale's crash.  I made it until the Bubba Smollett "noose" fiasco.  That, combined with the kneeling during the anthem crap killed any desire I had left to watch or follow professional sports.  Bunch of overpaid entitled ungrateful prima donnas.

I watched it all through my childhood, I lost interest about the time they changed the points rules.

ETA: I had to look it up, it was 2004.

This, I was a huge Dale fan and rarely missed a race. That day was it for me,I don't believe I have watched more than 20 minutes of any race since that day.

I still like it and watch it but the real NASCAR died a long time ago.

I cannot tell Ford/Chevy/Toyota cars apart except for the logo.

NASCAR has been suffering from death by a thousand cuts for many decades now. Everyone has their own line in the sand.
Silhouette cars, restrictor plates, radials, Dale, CoT, "race to the points", Bubba Smollett. Pick one.
I stoped watching with the CoT.

That was it for me.

I wasn’t a huge fan my whole life, but I was a casual fan. In the years building up before Dale’s crash I had really gotten into it. Jarrett, Wallace, Gordon, Martin, Irvan, Rudd, LaBonte brothers - they all made it fun.

I watched the rest of that season but that was it.

A lot of the older guys I know say it died when it wasn’t the Winston Cup anymore.

I've only been watching since 2010 or so (whenever Trevor Bayne won the 500) so I get the impact Earnhardt had on the sport but I don't miss it because I never knew it.

I like the new cars.  I don't mind stage racing.  I like the road courses and even the street course.  We go to two or three races a year.  I don't really like any of the new drivers.  We liked Tony Stewart but when he retired it was hard to root for anyone.  I can't relate to a rich kid who's had the best of everything since he started racing go karts at 2 years old.

Trackhouse changed that for me.  The drivers are ok (I like Chastain more than Suarez) but I like Justin Marks, the risks he took, and how he runs the team.  It was cool "getting in on the ground floor" as a fan of a new team.

I'm not a traditionalist.  I think "because that's how it's always been " is the worst reason to do anything...but I hate the clash being in LA and NASCAR being so hellbent on that west coast money.  It's never going to happen.  They're always going to hate you.  NASCAR could go full electric and California still won't care.

Maybe, but the more I learn, the more I think nascar died when they stopped being a stock car league.

The cars aren't even remotely anything like what comes off the showroom floor.

IMO the hudson hornet era of nascar was the best for that.

Dale was basically the end of the old breed.  whether he died or retired, the sport was going to decline based on the stupid shit NASCAR was implementing to become "more mainstream".

Regardless, that was the last race I ever watched.  Just didn't care anymore. I still liked some of the older drivers, and still looked at race results from time to time, but that was it.

Eh, a lot of things helped the decline and most of it was front office decisions like changing rules almost weekly.

Never had an interest really.  Go fast in a circle? OK but the "SC" stands for "Stock Car" right?  Uh,  I'm out.  I'd be onboard with actual off-the-production-line cars racing.
