A North Carolina man was billed $153,000 by the hospital that treated him for a copperhead bite. Luckily the man had insurance which covered much of the bill. Details at link...
Expensive bill thanks to snek |

I wonder what an illegal bit by a copperhead would be charged.

Really curious as to what a Black Mamba bite would cost a fellow. Or can you even survive those?
|
|

The Insurance probably said "Here's $3,500 . Take it, love it and shut the fuck up about it"
|
|
I'm still amazed that otherwise intelligent people still fall for 'how much was billed'. Nobody pays billed charges, especially in an emergency, except for the rare middle/upper middle class person without insurance that is worried about their credit score.

Well I had to take my wife to the ER for about three hours, she got IV fluids and painkillers, and a CT scan. It was $14,000. We are on a payment plan, it was before my insurance had kicked in.
It's easy to see how people vote for whatever political party says they are going to fix healthcare, because it definitely needs fixing. |

Medical billing in the US is so fucked up it makes me understand why people want single-payer.

Wow!
Last Sunday, a woman at my club’s USPSA match was bitten by a young Mohave rattler. That bite put her in ICU for a week so far. I’m morbidly curious about her hospital tab. |

Antivenin is one of those things that are actually expensive....

Government run single payer healthcare wouldn't have cost that much.
. . . Cause he wouldn't have got the anti-venom! |

Who even goes to the hospital for a Copperhead bite? Unless he was just little bitty or frail it’s not even worth going. Suck up the pain for the night and be done with it.

View Quote i wouldn't want to be the guy to test it though. i imported about a dozen black mambas over the years, while in tampa. all went to the bill haast, for his venom collecting venture. they were the only snakes i put into the fridge for 30 minutes, and then unbagged out in the parking lot (so i had room to run) in case things went south. that was the only snake i ever "feared". even a fierce snake is a walk in the park, compared to a black mamba. |

Whatever the victim would have contributed towards his deductible would buy plenty of ammo.

A guy ran a venomous snake serpentarium here locally. I think he got hit four times by a black mamba. Wrote a pretty interesting description of what it was like to get bit by one. Unfortunately he couldn’t survive a 9 mm fired by a crazy wife. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

Quoted: I think their outlandish prices are probably less out of corporate greed and more to make up for the free medical care crowd and low payouts for it by the government. View Quote when I check in patients (patient service rep aka receptionist at a local clinic) we ask those without insurance for at least $50 upfront for urgent care visits. Most of them don't pay it, and due to emtala we have no choice but to see them anyway. Cant tell you how many people I checkin with foreign passports or Mexican IDs. And this is in Salt Lake City, UT. If someone doesn't wanna show ID, were still mandated to see and treat them. |

Quoted: Kind of makes you wonder why you wouldn't just rely on the ER for all your healthcare needs and "forget your ID at home". Who is John Galt? View Quote My god the stories I've heard from people trying to get pain meds lmao. And I'm only part time in this job. My coworkers who do this full time have some real doozies. But for HIPAA reasons (and cuz Im typin this at a work computer) I wont say more lol |

His insurance company probably paid less than 20 grand. Here's mine for ten days in cardiac care.

What should it cost? Do y'all walk up to Ferarri dealerships and talk about Honda civic prices? Mexican healthcare is utter garbage...

I have heard 2nd hand that rattlesnake bites can cost six figures.

View Quote But they wouldn't pay, the hospital would "write it off", since they've already jacked the price up for paying customers to cover the non-paying ones. Like it or not, we already have socialized health care like that. It's just socialized through your costs with the private companies, not through the government. |
