Six arrested on wire fraud and conspiracy charges

From the article:

All six, according to acting-U.S. Attorney John Farley, "operated a business that enabled customers to exchange over $10 million in fiat currency for virtual currency, charging a fee for their service." The virtual currency exchange business used websites as well as operating virtual currency ATM machines in New Hampshire, he said.

And if a person can get cash for BTC, how is this different than those machines that'll kick out money for an old cell phone, etc?

For that matter, how are Coinstar machines legal?

Do I feel safer?

Should I?

I'm guessing the victim is the IRS.

Investigators accused some of engaging in "substantial efforts" to evade detection of the virtual currency exchange by avoiding answering financial institutions' questions about the nature of the business. The indictment accused them of misleading financial institutions into believing their virtual currency exchange business was a religious organization receiving charitable contributions.

Yep. Armenians, Gypsies, and Cubans have all fallen in love with the bitcoin way of getting money out of the country. Much easier to get your illicit funds out of the country with BTC than using traditional wires and money senders.

Lots and lots and lots of laws and regulations on banking, cash transactions, and the like in the name of anti-terrorism, the drug war, and anti-money laundering. That is what they will have jammed up these people on. They're 100% bullshit that's all about the government being able to track what you do with your money to ensure they get their unfair share.

Not to commit fraud or steal any money, to some bank, allegedly. And not to steal any money from the bank or anything. Nobody was duped out of anything. They misled a bank about the nature of their business, what the fuck does that do.

The small company my wife worked for was raided by armed IRS agents because the owners were pulling shady financial deals with nursing homes.  The IRS cared that the IRS wasn't getting their due, but didn't give a shit the business owners were cheating their employees out of 401k and other wages.

Someone explain to me how .gov is different from organized crime?  Maybe it's that .gov has absolutely no heart?

Whatever.  If it's crushable it was a stupid idea.  The whole point is that it couldn't be shut down or controlled.  Well, it can, turns out.

Socialism is also a beautiful theory (well, some people think so).  It's stupid in practice.

So money laundering rather than tax evasion.

Whatever, money laundering is practically a sport for the political party running this country so we shouldn't complain.

I doubt the government cares so much about getting their cut as much as they care about people utilizing a currency that exists outside the system boundaries of their modern monetary theory moneyprinter-goes-brrrrrr pyramid scheme.
