But in my opinion the way our nation is comprised of states with their own sets of laws doesn't really lend to a national force. That and i don't think it would be viewed too favorably by the general population compared to state/municipal/county agencies. |

Federal system. General law enforcement, like education, is the purview of the states. You'd need a constitutional amendment to authorize a national police force.

They wouldn't know the community they were assigned to serve, the local laws would be an incomprehensible tangle that would take a year of retraining every time they were reassigned, and their nearest accountability for misbehavior would be 500 miles away.

We have one. The FBI. Professionals enforcing Federal laws. Not the laws of individual States.
Unless you were thinking more along the lines of the Federales in Mexico. Guys standing on street corners with MP5's? I don't think we're there yet. Yet.............. |

the police people are most likely to interact with should be local so there's (hopefully) more oversight and a better chance for the locals to make changes in leadership

Every notice how they send National Guard troops from up north down south when things go bad? They don't want the forces commanded by the federal government to have loyalties to the local folks they may have to force to do something or go somewhere they won't agree with.
If there was a national police force some kid in Utah would get hired and they'd ship him off to New Jersey to work. Probably every few years they'd make them move around so they wouldn't build up strong friendships or loyalties to locals. |

Congress was not given the authority to raise a national police. Sum sorta Amendment in the Bill o' Rites held that those powers not delegated to the Federal government are reserved for the states and local government.

Our founders were wise. They did not believe in consolidated power. Police are the fist of domestic power. Our system is separàte by design to have multiple layers of severability and oversight. It is all designed to limit corruption and power. The corrupt town miles away does not impact me. The county sheriff or state or federal will investigate them, but there is no one single top cop of the country. If there were, imagine what would happen if they were corrupt.

It's pretty obvious. That last line is spot on. I didn't get as much time as I wanted to speak with Garda officers when I was in Ireland, but the times I did was interesting. I would've loved to compare the differences between our two countries more with them, and I think they would've as well. Ireland, UK, Colombia etc are much smaller areas and have much smaller population than the US. I think that helps when it comes to managing a national police force. Obviously bureaucracy can be a PITA no matter how small, but it would be such a colossal mess if it were tried in the US. We don't have good track records when it comes to bureaucracies. Given the recent IRS attacks against conservatives and EPA attacks against gun owners (via lead bullets), I'd hate to think what kind of agenda they'd try to push with a national police force of 1 million + enforcers. |
