Make him and his buddies sleep in it one night.

Then sneak out there at 0dark thirty and full auto fire blank rounds over his position.

For our WW2 reenactment here is our overnight outpost for the ETO reenactment. Not textbook but it's what you get at 1900 with light fading.

Same event, in the Marine camp they dug an MG pit that will actually defend against a Banzai charge later in the PTO reenactment

If it’s on public property just make sure some karens don’t find it and think you’re building militia structures. Happened recently in MI.

Get a sewing machine and figure out how to use it.

Any bulk cloth or plastic tarp material can be 100s of sandbags.

I haven't read the entire thread, but there's some good advice in here and it looks like you're making good progress.

I'm a WW2 reenactor so hole digging is something I'm familiar with. If you guys are using the foxhole for long-term/overnight use, be sure to put something between yourself and the hole floor; the dirt will suck body heat away from you more than the air. Also think about overhead cover, whether a tarp, shelter half, or a stronger log and branch cover.

Here are a couple I've stayed overnight in. Not comfortable but they did the job. The 'captured' zelts provided nice overhead cover.

This was a cold weekend.

Cool, my dad shut down me and my friend when we were like 12. Had it laid out. 4x6. And we were going to have overhead cover.

pick up an army manual or google it and build it to one of the pencil pictures in there.

don't forget the grenade sump.

Had a coworker who’s son and his friend, both Eagle Scouts, who were digging a hole like that.  Collapse on them and they both died.  Happened in ‘92-93 in Tampa.  Real sad.

My 16 year old started digging a hole a few years ago in the backyard woods.  I told him every few months to fill it back in but it never happened.  So I told him a week ago that we may as well make it a foxhole.

1) Any advice on design?  I’ve searched the internet and there are a lot of designs out there.

2) Any advice on what to use for sandbags?  We have plenty of fill for them coming out of the hole.

Yes, he’s using sandals to dig but it’s actually going well.  There is a stream that separates me from my neighbor’s property.  It’s all woods around the hole.

We had an extensive bunker complex in the lot next door with a Ho Chi Minh trail that led to the back street. They sure were surprised when they sold the lot and the bulldozer found it when they were clearing the woods.

@Ben

I will post more later.  He’s physically fit and I did contact the NH APC chapter a while back but I don’t know what happened as I don’t recall getting anything more than a confirmation they received my email, and I haven’t tried contacting them again.  He is a great hiker, loves guns and we canoe. He is 16.  My 14 y/o is not as motivated but he’s getting there.  I actually do more with him outdoors.

I am reading every post and will get back to commenting on the responses.

A quick question regarding access:  Is the part in yellow an area where I can put steps to get into the “foxhole”?  It’s a bitch to get in and out.  My plan would be to ring the MG pit (if that’s what this ends up as) with sandbags.

https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/36246/90949FFA-AC8C-4729-B37A-C740D3197982-2498143.jpg

I also think that this is turning out more as a machine gun pit rather than a foxhole, and the design is changing accordingly.

I want to put the soil into sandbags and they arrived so I am going to have both sons fill them for now to clean up the area around the hole.

I also bought a proper shovel and also a shovel to dig out the grenade sumps down to 2 feet, which will also help with water drainage.

I take Russian Systema and both kids also take classes.  I have a Cold Steel Russian shovel for them as well.  My sensei has shown us how to use it as a weapon.

I'll post some good stuff later when I'm on a computer.

You were technically correct!

I got the sand bags and we’ve started filling them.  The soil is a silt/clay mix with some organic matter given its location.  The plan is to fill the 100 sandbags since that soil needs to be cleaned up from around the hole as i don’t want to create a hazard from the soil collapsing.  I haven’t decided on the final design, but the sandbags will be part of it so may as well get them filled up.

We will definitely need some stairs to get into the hole more easily.  I was going to dig some stairs out and then use some 2X10’s cut to length over top of the earthen stairs?  I was going to cut them out on the side that faces my house.

How wide would you make the staircase?
