I don't miss all of the potholes but I still have my Dakota around for the occasional quick spin. 4.7L V8 and Viper T56 with a few things done and Hotchkis suspension set up for the road course. I did quite a bit of autocrossing in this in the mid-2000's.

Sorry, no pics but... MK1 and MK2 1979-1992 VW GTI. I have owned several 1985-1992 VW GTI in the Past, I LOVE the look and how small and quick they are for size, but MAN are they fall apart crap boxes and im sure the survival rate in an average crash is VERY low, oh, and they leak from everywhere,,, mostly the sunroof though. I still love the look though

Oh and 1990-1991 and 1995-1999 Eagle Talon, AWD Turbo. the challenge is keeping them running for more than 1 week but WHEN they actually drive,,, fast as HELL and I LOVE the wedge look.

I don't actively look, but I keep my eyes peeled for a deal on a clean Toyota Cressida. I'd love to find a decent clean one with a good body and make it into a mild to moderate drift missile.

+1 owned an cresida. Thing was a like missile and very smooth. I liked it so much after I totaled it I bought it back and had it rebuilt.  Eventually traded in on a Tacoma.

Also a 2nd gen Camaro lover.  Don't know why to be honest but I did own a 78 for a while.

I had a coworker back in the day with a Shelby Omni he had done a bit of work to. He used to tear people to shreds on the street. All the Mustang bro's would get so pissed at him. I remember laughing so hard at all the V8 kids getting smoked by this guy all over MSP metro area. Good times.

He wanted to help me get my 626 GT Turbo upgraded but I couldn't afford it back then. It was before import turbos were popular so everything was expensive and hard to find.

The Raider was a cool name. These are highly underrated vehicles these days. I saw a Radier the other day at AutoZone. It was pretty clean. Three teenage guys were inside trying to find a spray in liner to redo the interior. Made me smile remembering the adventures I had in mine and thinking about the adventures they will have in that one.

There was a time when our little 2.2 and 2.5 turbo cars were incredible on the street. I can remember doing some stoplight racing in my 86 GLH Turbo lined up on Woodward Ave. with a Terminator Mustang, a GN, and one of the "new" Z06 Corvettes. The other three guys were really disappointed that I was right up there with them every time. It was hilarious.

We was kangs.

Back in 91 or 92, I had a chance to buy a brand new Storm in that color for $5k from my step-uncle's business. It still had the window sticker on it. My parents said no, Because it looked like a golf ball with all the hail damage it had. I was very disappointed and ended up in a 81 Jetta with no air for $900.

Chrysler Conquest TSI. back in the 80's I was thinking about buying one.

Insurance was going to be more than the damn car note.

It was rated as the most expensive car to repair in a 5 mph impact.

Average cost to repair a 5 mph crash as over $5,000

Glad I did not, the people that bought them found out how much a money pit it was.

$2800.00 ECU, turbos that did not last, blown head gaskets and heads that were junk.

I bought an 86 Corolla GT-S to flip back in the mid 90s and that was a truly fun car. First car my daughter ever drove. Almost kept it for her, but sold it for a good profit, and ender up putting her in a Porsche 914 instead. Which was also a fun little car.

I had a 1978 Celica. It was honestly the slowest car I've ever driven in my life, it could not get out of its own way...0-60 was probably 20 seconds. Worse, about 50% of the time, if you turned left it would die.

So, had to make 3-rights when you wanted to turn left.

I had an '82 Toyota Corolla 5 speed for many years. That vehicle was damn near impossible to kill. My first dragrace (nighttime street drags) was in it against another guys old POS sentra. It was late and the real cars were starting to disperse so all the shitboxes  came out to play. Unfortunately I would up losing because I somehow managed to slip the shit out of the clutch I was so nervous.

I always used to love fucking with all the hicks around here telling them i've got a hemi in my Toyota. 99% of them couldn't wrap their minds around the fact hemi is about the combustion chamber design and wasn't just a mopar thing lol.

@killingmachine123

My first was an 85 GLH-T, no a/c car. The second gear synchro was bad and it would grind a bit going into gear. The 525 was not the greatest trans. But it was my favorite car. It was unmodified and met an untimely end when I was rear ended while at a stop.

My second was a 1987 GLHS. This car I modified enough that after the second time I bricked the trans I modified and installed the better A523 cable shifted trans. I was running 18psi with ported head, s60 cam, Stage 3 Garrett turbo, etc.

I remember Lambros Race Engineering and FWD Performance as the companies that sold race parts. On the GLHS I switched over to the SMEC computer and had a guy named Paul chip it. It was fun to work on but I worked on it way too much. Broke all kinds of parts.

I am not nominally a Dakota fan but that is a really nicely done one.
Almost makes me regret passing on the clean, straight V8 powered one I could have had for next to nothing.
But it wouldn't pass CA smog and numbers didn't add up (cost of truck+ repairs).

So many of the cars that were affordable to young people int the early 2000's were all show and no go.  The 3000GT, Stealth, Eclipse , Xtreme S10, Probe, Talon, etc.

If you wanted something fast you bought a LS1 car.

I went to a lot or Dakota R/T national meets and races over the years (even though I only have the 4.7L V8) and there are still plenty of people into them but compared to modern day cars the power figures are nothing unless heavily modded. The auto trans was not great either, nothing from 20 years ago compares to the new ZF 8 speed in my Ram and other Mopars.

The guys who would swap all their crap back to stock every year in CA to pass smog always blew my mind. One guy has a very nice twin turbo regular cab out there, not sure how he passes.

Saw thread title....wondered if there'd be any 2.2 turbo love....pleasantly surprised

My GLH-Ts rusted away but I still have a Spirit R/Ts for when I feel like wrenching on something.  Least reliable car ever but I spanked on many a mustang with that car, never mind all the dumbass VWs.  Mine dyno'd 225/275 at the wheels before mods.   It pulled strong well into 5th gear, but I never did much more than 145 with it, even in those years common sense intervened on occasion, before I ran out of boost (or road).
