Rowing machine?
Elliptical ski?
Stair stepper?

What one machine will offer the best combination of strength... Cardio... Endurance... Overall fitness?

A rowing machine will get upper body, lower body/ legs, and some core exercise. It can also be hell on a messed up lower back.

Cardio and Lifting should require at least two different machines IMHO

If you're new to lifting I'd say get a bowflex

If you're looking to build a home gym then I'd start with a rack and go from there

If you do upper and lower body weight HIIT on the mat, this post nails it.

Burpees alone won't cut it though.

I vote this.  Much easier to store away when you quit exercising.  Plus machines take up a lot of space.

Another vote for Bowflex...I bought one cheap probably 15years ago off a guy who needed some cash bad....I still use it ( albeit  not enough), and it gives me a good pump. The best thing I see about it is that you can take every set to failure/muscle exhaustion. I still do the same old full body routine that was on the owners manual that came with it. I put the leg attachment on every now and then to do leg extensions and curls.....I rarely use the lat attachment, but I might start.

With the right types of WO, this truly is the right answer

I’ve just started getting back to they gym after doing garage workouts all during Covid then taking about 9m off.  Strength is going back up but overall fitness isn’t the same as with the garage WOs.

Below is a WO I did last week with a yoga mat and using a couple 1g water jugs as weights:

12 burpees to start/finish, and between each
exercise
below:

Start w/12 burpees

-50 Squats
-50 Wide Dead Lifts
-50 side lunges -25 side
-50 bicycles
-50 SuperMan
-50 squat jumps
-50 leg lifts
-50 curtsy lunges 25/25
-50 jumping jacks
-50 plank knee touches
-50 push ups
-50 squat pulses
-50 Russia. Twist
-50 bent row
-50 vups

Finish w/12 burpees

It kicked my tail and I was huffing/puffing the whole time.  Still sore today

*I did use a barbell for the deadlifts/bent rows

You can use it every day and have the nicest lawn around.

Imagine doing dead lifts and sit ups at the same time for 20-40 minutes.  That is rowing.

It would be better complemented by a bench press (or pushups) than a squat rack. Pecs are about the only thing rowing doesn't hit.

If you could only have one thing, it would probably be adjustable dumbbells.

If you could have two things, plates and a barbell.

If you put this kind of effort into a good weight training program you would probably be happier with the results.

Heavy lifting, cardio, drywall repair, running from her, cops, their dogs. the possibilities are endless.

Besides, fucking a bowflex kind of hurts.

Rowing machine. Look at magnetic or water if you plan to keep it inside and people live with you, or you live in a townhome/condo/apartment.

The Concept2 has an uncomfortable seat IMHO, I did not like those when I did CF.

… or horny Asian girlfriend. Rowing machine is safer though.

2 years ago when I hit 60 I got a soloflex, worked pretty well and I could cover all muscle groups well enough but I started using dumbells for several exercises because the rubber bands just weren't cutting it. More and more I started using free weights until I finally got a half rack and more free weights. I still use the leg extension and leg curl from the soloflex ( very effective)  but everything else is free weights and cables. I was doing push pull legs splits but recently switched to a 3 days a week full body workout. In the spring I will probably switch back to splits.

Depends on how disciplined that person is.

My squat rack has sat dormant for weeks at a time when life gets busy, but always gets dusted off and used again before too long.

It's probably one of my most used things as far as hobbies go.
