Bowflex

Cardio and Lifting should require at least two different machines IMHO

If you're new to lifting I'd say get a bowflex

If you're looking to build a home gym then I'd start with a rack and go from there

Cardio?  Run outside.  Its free.

Resistance training can be done with bodyweight in the beginning, but there is literally no "machine" or apparatus that can do what a rack and a barbell can do.

Cardio > strength training for most purposes. But that’s by a slim margin, so get both. But for cardio an elliptical is hard to beat when you consider the relative wear and tear of other cardio exercises on joints and the like.

I’m lazy. I do 45 minutes on average on the elliptical every night and ruck once/twice a month with about 1k’ elevation, 40lbs, and about 5 miles. Can’t do free weights cause my back got fucked up when I was 22 and I don’t want it to get any worse. No space in the house for other equipment, so elliptical it is.

I fucking hate working out (except rucks and the elliptical, surprise surprise) so I’m damn near ecstatic that I managed to make the above routine an actual habit. I can’t remember the last time I didn’t hit the elliptical before bed.

This is where I'm at today. Barbell and squat rack.

Eta: I just go to the gym though. I'm weird, I hated the "work from home" bullshit during covid. I also prefer going to a gym to workout.

once upon a time I would say a few dozen acres to clear and a chainsaw.  But eventually, perhaps a concept 2 in an air conditioned room.

Another vote for squat rack & barbell.

Later down the line you can attach a cable system to it.

You don't need a machine for cardio.

If I had to pick one thing.   A squat rack.

Sets of 8 with heavy squats will bring my heart rate up to 160.

Fwiw,  the cost of a machine will buy around a year's worth of gym membership.

My wife bought a rogue assault bike.   It currently collects laundry.

Anecdotally,   before fire academy,   I only lifted weights.    My leg days had some heavy volume.

I was able to keep up during the daily 5k runs and 100+ stories of stair climbs with gear on
Despite not having done cardio in years.

Versaclimber….

Yup. This is the best cardio machine that works just about the entire body. And it's easy on the knees as you age. The hardest part is getting to a point where you are fit enough to get the best out of it.

You should also get a pull-up bar and couple good kettlebells for strength and muscle balance but the Versaclimber is the king of cardio machines, bar none.

FPNI, you can do intense conditioning workouts with a barbell, but you're not gaining strength on a cardio machine.

Then for longer cardio workouts you can just go outside and walk or run.

I have some dumbbells and a small weight bench, works great and it doesn't take up much room.

A barbell.
Suppose it would help to have a rack for doing squats and benchpress

Found the crossfit guy.

There's a crossfit place here in town.  Whenever you drive past it, there will always be a group of people outside doing something with tractor tires.  Usually its smacking them with hammers.  Or tying the tires to a harness they wear and then running up and down the street in the middle of traffic.  It burns more calories if you make sure everybody knows you're doing it.

A good solid floor with 8 foot plus cieling for jumping jacks, jump rope, push ups, situps, planks, and a situp bar.
A kettle ball and free weights are nice to have.

Normally I would just agree with some of the posters who say power rack with barbell, plates, and bench, but some of this depends on the space you have available.

Did I say kettlebell yet? You can push it, pull it, hinge it, carry it, do cardio with it, or do bro lifts with it. Plus, you don’t have to dedicate a wall to it.

And, you can’t take your stair stepper to the range.

The squat rack is my base, pull ups, bench, rings etc. I have a garage gym, I was just grilling meat, and sweating it out through my routine after work. Feeling good to go. But these turk get ups...they will smash you. I hate them

Oh, I understand the goodness of the squat rack.

I just like the versatility and portability of the kettlebells. I’ve gotten some good use out of them over the years. And yeah, those get ups are great fun.
