My application has been given to the chief of the fire department. I should be accepted on the third of next month (Volunteer/No pay).

You need a mailbox shaped like a fire ax, like one of the clowns in my neighborhood.

How many flashing lights are you installing on your vehicle?
And... Which model of cop car will you be purchasing? |

How many stickers are you going to put in the rear window? . It's funny bc it's true. What do you suggest over a pager, not sure what department you are in but out text service doesn't work well at all and it is usually 1-2 mins late |

Sweet! You can be the guy at work that has an annoying ringtone you can't miss for every text he gets from them.
|
|
Be sure to wear all "I'm a firefighter" clothing on your days off.

It's what you make of it. You can buy all the gear and cover you car in so many lights you get reported as a UFO, or you can go to every training session you can get into, get additional certs as an EMT and HAZMET Tech and be seen as a go-to guy in your district.

Something usually kids do and grow out of where I am. Dunno about the rest of the country. Around here it's a bunch of people with nothing better to do and a chip on their shoulder. Whatever floats your boat I am a bit biased sorry... |

Just make sure your priorities are in order. Do the right thing, learn, train, don't get sucked into BS politics of it. Remember it's not your job, seen people get sucked in and lose their priorities. Not a hater as said above (have friends who are still vollies not a big deal), just my experience is a bit different so take it for what it's worth..... |

If you steer clear of it then you will find your time in the fire service much more enjoyable. and a little story from one of my Neighboring fire companies in today's news, for the haters out there. http://www.syracuse.com/crime/index.ssf/2015/08/5_cny_firefighters_to_recieve_award_for_rescuing_2_from_burning_mobile_home.html#incart_river "CLAY, N.Y. -- Five Moyers Corners Fire Department members will be collectively named "Firefighter of the Year" for their rescue of two men from a mobile home fire on Christmas morning in the the town of Clay. The rescue, which was dubbed "The Christmas Miracle," was made by Deputy Chief Frank Crispin, Deputy Chief Steve Zaferakis, and firefighters Ryan Whitmore, Phil Vogt and Jeremy Corso. The firefighters placed themselves in extreme peril to save the lives of two individuals who were trapped in a burning mobile home, according to the Firemen's Association of the State of New York. I know a firefighter who, never having enough stickers, took to printing firefighter sayings and pictures off the Internet, put them in a document protector, and taped them to the back of his truck.

Best piece of advice for you.......Keep your mouth shut and be the first to get in there and do the work. |

Whatever floats your boat I am a bit biased sorry... Around here all the fire departments are volunteer, even the one in The City nearby (of 10k people, but it's an official PA city) so if just kids did it there would be a lot of fires that wouldn't get put out. Or groundhogs saved from trees. And shit like that. I'm not a firefighter, and have never needed any to show up at anywhere I've lived, but since volunteers would be the ones to do so I appreciate that people do it. The guy that runs one of the local pizza places has 37 years as a volunteer firefighter, he makes damn good pizza too, so they're good in my book. |

Take all the training you can get, especially outside your department and city. Be first to help with a task, always help rolling hose, ask questions and learn every tool. ALWAYS TAKE A USEFUL TOOL INSIDE THE INVOLVED STRUCTURE. Never give that tool away.
On leave from my department until my back & knees get squared away. Good luck! Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Enjoy it OP. Get all the certifications you can and do the national registry for your EMS stuff. Great segway to a paid position.
And as much as I hate the shit talkers, don't go overboard with the fire fighting schwag. |

Piss on all the haters. You're doing a great service to your community.
I"ve been a volunteer is a small rural department for 18 years now. No stickers, no light bars and no pagers (we have a text message alert system). You might see my bunker gear bag in the back seat, if you look hard. |

This explains the volunteer Fire Fighter who returns from his bi-yearly trash can fire and spends the next 2 hours talking about how fucking cool he is for slaying the dragon and saving the day. He then masturbates to such an excess that his dick turns bright red and starts to bleed. A KD will drive a large red pick up truck with a light bar and stickers of fire fighters in the rear window. A KD will wear a Bat Belt of pagers, radios, flashlights, knives, CPR pocket mask, ect… A KD will have several tattoos of fire fighter themes. Many of which might feature 9/11, FDNY, or 343.....despite the fact that they were not even in the fire service on 9/11 and could not find their way to New York City because there is no GPS on their Talk Tracker flip phone. (Which is also prominently worn on the Bat Belt.) KDs can almost always be found leaning on the fence at rural high school football games. Their uniform consists of a dark blue t-shirt with white writing tucked into Wrangler jeans and dirty leather work boots. They will be the ones trying desperately to hear their walkie talkie over the crowd, because there is a group of fellow Ketchup Dicks on a working structure fire (aka fully involved trailer house) in the next county over. Ketchup Dicks will consider themselves highly trained despite evidence that they are not. They will harbor animosity with nearby paid fire departments because they are insanely jealous of paid firefighters. This leads to shit talking and disrespect of the paid firefighters. However, paid firefighters could really give a fuck less what a Ketchup Dick thinks about him. Examples: That dude's a ketchup dick. Look at his big truck with the light bar and stickers. Paid Firefighter: "Looks like we're gonna need some backup, Captain. Should we call some Ketchup Dicks?" Paid Captain: "Fuck No." |

Lots of noise here and of course some of it has more than a little bit of truth to it .
I have lived in and near small towns most all of my life , all with Vol fire and ambulance service. Some of them provide some entertainment but among my friends and family there is hardly anyone who has not been helped some or a whole lot at one point or another |
