Quoted: Recall that Reagan wasn't typical of the post-WW2 GOP. You had William Buckley pushing out the Birchers, and you had Nixon being almost identical to JFK policy wise. The GOP was nearly dead after the FDR era, and it was probably saved because it was anti-commie and the Dems were very close to being commies in the 30s and 40s. By the time you get to JFK and Nixon you pretty much had an agreement that Big Government was good but commies were bad. At the time Goldwater was seen as the last gasp of small government ideology. The modern Democrat tilt towards going full commie is similar to what they were doing in the 30s and 40s. I think the experience of WW2 and watching the commies in the USSR take Eastern Europe and the PRC rise in China is what halted that. The John Birch society was named after a man murdered by Chinese communists after all. They won't make that mistake again. It basically took that level of insanity(among everything else) to drain the sludge from voters brains not to vote Democrat. I pray it sticks. The John Birch society was named after a man murdered by Chinese communists after all. Yeah, the Right in the U.S. got absolutely wrecked by the Depression, New Deal, and WWII. The beginning of the Cold War plus the rise of the post-war conservative intellectual movement and its impact on the GOP (leading to Goldwater being a presidential candidate and later on, Reagan) is what kept it alive. But even pre-Depression, the GOP was an ideologically heterogeneous party that included elements on both the Left and the Right (true since it was founded, pretty much). Unfortunately, as the Right experienced a resurgence within the party, it got coopted by those who subscribed to a special form of progressivism, with the misnomer "neoconservatism". Heck, more recently, they even took advantage of the Tea Party Movement (Paul Ryan is a good example of a person involved in that). Seems like there is a mixed backlash against that now within the GOP, both from the Right and from the populists, who by nature have some Leftist instincts. |

Quoted: Our group from the Cary Street meetup area were standing around the corner of Bank and 9th Street when part of the Silent Brigade, nicely attired in their battle rattle and yellow armbands marched up 9th Street and then stopped and faced the Capital building. Glancing over at the Virginia State Troopers, the look in their eyes was like holy shit, these guys have way better gear and weapons than we do. One of many outstanding moments that day. I was probably like many that were there, we didn't take a lot of pictures because of an OPSEC mindset, not realizing that so many pictures of people there were going to get plastered all over the place by the media that was there, who were all waiting for that great photo op of all the violent things that they all just knew would have to happen with so many white supremacists, gun nuts, etc., in one place. On my daily commute a farmer has a big Army of Northern VA battle flag at the back of his property. His property butts up to the Chesapeake Expressway. I saw that flag and I got to thinking, the man who hoists that flag almost certainly voted for Winsome Sears.
