Is there a good reason NOT to wear Orange??

Yes. It makes it harder to hunt.
You are told that game animals do not "see" blaze orange. That they have more rods, for better night vision, and fewer color sensing cones. That they see red less well.

I'm here to tell you that's horseshit. That statement comes from 48 years of hunting elk. And mule deer. And moose.
The party line on the way these animals see may, or may not, be true. I am certain that the G&F types push the boundary of facts on this.
But one thing these critters DO see is contrast.
And movement. Their eyes on on the side of their heads for a reason.
And you have to move to hunt, unless you're a stand hunter. And moving while wearing a high contrast outfit, that clashes with the environment you're moving through, will get you busted.

They make blaze orange "camo" patterns and blaze orange coats with leaves sewn onto them like a thin ghillie suit  that break up outlines outstanding.

I wear a solid orange cap and vest and am about 50/50 getting a deer when I've went out deer hunting.  Of course, I'm about 100% seeing a deer out in the woods when I'm not allowed to be shooting at them.  If they can see orange and still get shot in droves by dudes wearing orange every year, then they're even dumber than we thought.

“He’s been hunting with his dad since he was 7 years old.”  Sounds like they’ve been really lucky the last 21 years. Until now.

I haven't read the OP or even a reply.

I will say there are some hunters out there with extreme "deer fever".  They will draw up or shoot at damn near anything that moves. I'm guessing this was the case.  I've been deer hunting the last 15 years.  Even an 8 point won't make my heart race.  I've passed on over 100 deer this year.  Fell terrible for the situation, however it happened.
