Quoted: Quoted: Quoted: Quoted: So a couple years back I was riding the school bus home. I live way out in the country so I’m the last to get off. Me and the bus driver are about to turn off to the last section of dirt road when he slams on the breaks and shouts what the hell is that?!?!?! I sit up startled and see something about 60 yards out in front of us on a small rise on the road just before the turn. It resembled something an old farmer told me had been killing his cattle for years and said he always saw 2 together. The beast looked like a large hound but moved like a big cat, it was jet black and it’s shoulder height must have been 3’5 ft with a very slim profile. It had its back to us and was walking down the backside of the rise. When we lost sight of it I told the driver to get up there to it. He gunned it but when we got there it was gone. I looked to the left and saw the top wire of a 6 string bouncing and new he was going through the shrubs to the thicker woods about a 3/4 a mile out at the base of a mountain where the old man said he’d seen it several times. So the bus driver starts back to my house and I call my friend and tell him whats up and to meet me at my house. I went in the house to grab my AR and throw my tac vest and come out to wait for my bud. He shows up with his 30-06 so I jumped in his truck and went back to the site. We crossed the fence and picked up a set of very large paw prints and started to fallow them. We where so focused in tracking it that by the time we had reached the mountain it was already getting dark. Realizing neither one of us had a light we decided to head back. We had only about 100 yards of heavy woods left before we where in the shrubs and muskeet trees when we heard a deep low growl from behind us. We started to walk again when we heard a second growl to our left about 30 yards away. We decide it was time to take off and started to sprint to the edge of the woods. As we ran the beasts could be heard keeping up with us. At one point the beast most have been 20 ft back and was snarling and snapping with rage just out of sight. We turned away to the right and got into a clearing and stopped prepared to shoot but nothing came out of cover. We stood there for about 10 minutes and could hear the 2 things circling us at opposite ends. By now it was to damn dark to see anything. We waited until neither one of them was between the road and us and took off running again. They got right back on use and stayed with us until we hit the road. I was scared as shit cause it was pitch black and there was no moonlight. We had to walk down the road about 300 yards to get to the truck but never heard anything. We got in and my buddy dropped me of at the house. He had to cross back over that road to get home and called me shortly after leaving mine and said you could see our tracks on the road and 2 sets of the giant paws. I never did see it again and it rained that night and washed the tracks off. Ever since then I never walk around out here without a gun and a light <a href="http://img232.imageshack.us/i/l598f2e033ac8ab474e0ac6ej3.jpg/" target="_blank">http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/4663/l598f2e033ac8ab474e0ac6ej3.th.jpg</a> it was shaped like this but black and more filled out. it also had a long thick tail and a but i never saw its head. Saw this three nights ago. Driving home from work, I live about 30 miles out in the country, it emerged from the barrow on the side of the road and ran at my truck, as I was driving past. There are normally a lot of deer on the road, but this was black with brown around the face and it ran lifting its legs like a bear on the run. Long tall and skinny, not like anything I've ever seen. Spectral Hounds have been recorded for centuries. I am not too familiar with them killing livestock but it may be possible.....though they are scary, shooting them or harming them seems, apparently, ill advised as it apparently brings VERY bad luck. You do NOT fuck with Moddey Dhoo. Spectral hounds/black dogs interest me. Some of them (mostly ones with specific names) are omens of impending death or misfortune, and if you see them you know bad shit is about to happen. Others are merely omens of something significant changing in your life in the near future (good or bad). Others are seen as protectors, guarding travelers (especially children) from harm until they reach home. It's interesting to see the different versions different locales have of the same phenomena. Ah yes Swindle, the "Mauthe Doog". I remember reading about them growing up in Ohio. That was something that would keep you awake. |

Sweet. It's been in the public domain practically since it came out, of course. Yep. I read somewhere (or heard?) that one of the main reasons they did the 1990 remake of that was in order to try to strengthen their non-existent hold on the copyright to the original. Apparently, it didn't do any good though.
Great movie though, considering that it had such a low budget, and it really was the beginning of the whole zombie movie thing. Edited to add: That site also has the 2nd version of Dawn of the Dead. Here it is: http://www.hulu.com/watch/92766/dawn-of-the-dead?c=Horror-and-Suspense |

I've been involved in childrens ministry for quite some time (about 5 years).
We always had this kid who EVERYONE swore was possessed , every time I was around him , I got this bad feeling, but didn't think too awfully much of it. It was always bad because he would disrupt other kids during our services, praise & worship ,ect. After a few months of working with him, I had a few people tell me they couldn't believe I was able to work with him at all. They informed me, not too long ago, that this kid (maybe 6-7 years old) had literally dragged 2 full grown men (who were both 300lbs or so) down the entire length of the sanctuary , when they tried to restrain him from going up to the pastor during a prayer meeting or the like...........Absolutely amazing stuff! |

My family on my mother's father's side owned slaves and planted cotton before the war. My aunts still live on the last remaining bit of the plantation land (a couple acres) in Northern Mississippi near Oxford. The rest was sold off over the years, and nobody remembers what all it included. The war was very bad to this place. I remember as a child finding bits of spurs, buckles, stirrups and projectiles all the time. The last time I was there I saw a Minnie ball on the gravel driveway laying like it had been dropped yesterday. Upon closer examination, it had that neat mushroom shape you see in advertisements for hollow point ammunition. Normally the balls have odd deformities like you might expect from striking a tree or the earth, but this one had apparently struck something softer.
This sparked the telling of several family stories. Aunt so-and-so used t otell about hearing battle sounds in the woods. Grandma whats-her-name told stories about visitations from soldiers. Before my grandmother passed, she told a story about how she was alerted by the commotion of horses passing by. When she stepped outside, she saw in full color and detail, a regiment of Confederate cavalry making their way through the hills. Later, my mother told me this story from her childhood. She was about seven or eight years old and she spent her days playing in the woods and creeks on the old plantation. Her and a friend of similar age wandered off the dirt road and came upon the ruins of a great plantation house. It was half overgrown with kudzoo and still standing only because it leaned on many great squared-off pines which had been recruited for use as columns. The little girls loved the house, especially my mother whose childhood nickname was "Scarlett O'Hara". They had decided to go inside until her friend pointed out a bearded man watching them from a third floor window. They yelled at him but he did not respond. They were scared so they went home and told my grandmother about the house and the man. People in the area knew about the house but it was no big deal. Granny told them to stay away, just to be safe. The next day they had forgotten their fear and went straight to the house. The scary man was gone so they entered the first floor to find it bare of furniture or artifacts, and in very poor condition. They played and invented stories about the old place until they went home. My mother's friend's mother told them the house had been used as a command post and hospital during the war, and that nobody had lived there in living memory. It was thought the owners perished in the war. I don't think the house had ever belonged to our family. The girls played in the house the next day. My mother left her friend to explore the second floor, but she was startled to encounter a pair of boots at the top of the stairs. She looked up and was greeted by a man in a great gray coat, with an impressively long beard. He was not scary or sinister, and he told her she couldn't go onto that floor because it wasn't for nice little girls to see. She was still too young to understand what had just happened to her, so she did not make a fuss and they continued to play downstairs. They never saw anything else unusual until one day, like a switch, the strangeness turned on. My mother talks about the last day they played in the house with distinct conviction an genuine apprehension. They were downstairs playing like always, and heard footsteps and speech from above. It was faint, then escolated into bumps and shouts. They made it halfway up the stairs on their way to investigate when the first frightening scream let out. It was as though someone had been awakened by incurring a traumatic injury. The unpleasant voices and the urgency of the footsteps and bumps escalated as fast as they descended the staircase. Moans, cries and thick southern cursing could be heard as they ran out the door and into the woodline. The girls peered over the side of a low spot on the ground to see the scary bearded man back in his window, staring directly at them. They ran all the way home and slept in the same bed that night without telling anyone what happened. The next day they lied to Granny about being at the old house. Granny knew something was up and had confronted them. She must have believed their alibi because they were too young to play with fire, and girls don't usually play with fire anyhow. The old house had burned to the ground overnight. It had no electricity, no heat aside from a fireplace not used in a century, and there was no rain or lightning that night. As far as they knew, no other kids played in the house. The remains of the burned pine columns and other debris were dozed into a ravine to discourage whoever burned the house from making it a regular bonfire site. |

Met the man in person, actually. He autographed my Army of Darkness DVD and movie poster. I'm starting to think I should start hanging out in more midnight grindhouse flick theaters. And there should totally be an annual convention for the zombie genre. Zombcon. "You kids call this a zombie apocalypse? This is nothing compared to the Great Zombie Attack of '57!" "What?" "Heh. I'm just bullshitting you." "How can they move so fast? I call zombie bullshit." |

WHO'S LAUGHING NOW?! AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!" "Groovy." "Let's go down there and carve us a witch." "Hey! I'll swallow your soul! I'll swallow your soul! I'll swallow your soul!" "Swallow this." *BOOM* I got to meet Bruce Campbell (as previously mentioned) and he's a really cool guy in person. I saw him at a sci-fi/horror convention where he autographed my stuff for me and chatter for a bit (I need to dig up the pic of me and him together), then he did some Q and A stuff (which was basically improv standup comedy; he's fucking HILARIOUS, especially when he started harassing the guy's wife over the phone.) and showed Evil Dead 2 for the first time. Previously, he had always screened either the original Evil Dead or Army of Darkness; I got to be there for a historic first when he screened Evil Dead 2. Prior to showing the movie, he gave us some trivia about it, such as the chainsaw exhaust being cigarette smoke blown through a hose in his sleeve (and once the hose came lose and he got nicotine gunk all over himself). He also explained that the scene with the possessed fat lady as she's spinning in the air was Sam Raimi's little brother in the costume and the liquid visible in the scene was his SWEAT pouring out of the costume because it was hot and had no ventilation. When we saw that scene in the movie, half the audience went "EEEEWWW!"
Then the next day I got to heckle him (there's video of it online) at the debut of his latest movie, My Name Is Bruce, at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin. Really cool guy. I have Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn on DVD of course (with commentary by Bruce Campbell!) and both the theatrical and director's cut editions of Army of Darkness. I like the tv edit the most, personally; it's the full-length director's cut, but with the theatrical ending and the theatrical "good, bad, I'm the guy with the gun" instead of the director's cut "I ain't that good". |

It just wasn't my thing though. Man, I agree completely about the drive in theaters. I absolutely loved them. We used to just have a real blast at those too! Hehh... wild times is an understatement. Kids these days just have no idea what they're missing, ya know?
Actually, there's still a tiny little drive in not too far from where I live, but it's much more "family oriented" than the old ones used to be sometimes. One time I went with a girlfriend out to Memphis just to screw around and see the sights, and as it turned out there was a HUGE drive-in theatre across the street from the motel we were staying in. That thing had something like _8_ screens!!!!! And that was pretty late in the drive-in era... Mid '80's. - Not too long ago someone told me they thought the place might still be there, but that it doesn't have all the different screens anymore. But that was the craziest thing I ever saw... Multiple screens at a drive in! |

Jim Yeah, very often that movie used to play at the same time as movies like The Song Remains The Same, Wizards, DOTD, and later "Heavy Metal", etc. I remember sticking my head in the door to see what Rocky Horror was all about and thinking... "Nope. Not for me". "Mommy, why can't we fight and win?" "Because they have guns and technology. We just have love." "Let me show you a trick Ma showed me when you weren't around... by the way... I'm glad you changed your name, you son of a bitch!" *BLAM* "Fritz? Get up, Fritz. They killed Fritz! They killed Fritz! Those lousy, stinkin', yellow fairies! Those horrible, atrocity-filled vermin! Take that! And that!" Wizards kicked ass. I REALLY need to see Heavy Metal. The fact that I haven't is just... sad, really. I've only seen bits and pieces of it on youtube. Aww, man... MAN... ... You absolutley MUST see Heavy Metal all the way through! Check your IM's. |

When I was in the Marine Corps back in 2005/2006, my infantry unit, the 2/6 Marines, deployed to Fallujah to do a tour there to provide security. Now, keep in mind, this was after the major battle fought there in 2004, but the insurgency was very bad there at that time.
The place was basically either OK..or we would get hit with squad sized ambushes of insurgents, and of course your daily dose of IEDs and snipers. One of the memebers of my infantry company's name was Brown. Brown was, a timid, kinda quiet fellow, he wasn't a very good Marine..in fact he kinda got picked on alot. Anyone who has spent time around 20 something year old Marines can tell you, it can be a hard life for anyone considered "weak"..or w/e. Anyway, Brown was assigned to a squad as tail end charlie, he brought up the end of a patrol. One night while out on patrol at dusk...a little past NVG dark..Brown stopped the patrol because he said he could see something scampering around on the rooftops, following them. He said that whatever it was he could only see it through his NVGs. The Marines reacted, set up a perimeter, and searched the area of walls and buildings and alleys, and took a rooftop to visually search the area. Nothing. Later, after the patrol, Brown called what he had seen "the mothman". the patrols went on, and Brown claimed he had been having dreams that he would be on a patrol and his vision would fade to red. Another Marine in the platoon, was a kid from Brazil named Barbosa. Barbosa was a Devout Christian, and it is believed by many that Barbosa talked to Brown about his experiences and was able to lead him to Christ. On January 7th 2006, Brown was killed after his squad had been pinned down by a Sniper. The squad was ordered to get up from cover after the Plt. Commander was informed by a Cobra Helicopter crew of possible Insurgents leaving the area a few blocks away. Brown was shot in the back of the head while crossing an alley. On January 28th , Barbosa was killed in a freak hummvee wreck. Some think that his time on Earth was done after he led Brown to the Lord. |

That's Evil Dead 2. "Uh-huh. That's right. Who's laughing now?
Damn, you're right. That _was_ Evil Dead 2. That had to be fun meeting him. He sounds like a really funny guy! |

Anyone who has ever spent any time at all visiting someone in an Alzheimer's or dementia ward will be familiar with the experience of seeing patients talking gibberish or carrying on "conversations" as though they are talking to someone else who is standing there, when in fact there is no one there and they are just talking into thin air. That always gives me the creeps. What if their mental illness has unlocked some latent ability that allows them to see and communicate with spirits that the rest of us cannot see? Ever wonder about that? The story about the possessed girl (posted above) got me thinking about this. When we used to visit my great-grandmother at the nursing home, there were two little old ladies with alzheimers there. They were best friends and were always delighted to see each other, but they had no idea who the other lady was. They both mistook each other for someone else and would spend hours talking to each other. Except they'd be having completely different conversations; one would be talking about something totally unrelated to what the other was talking about, and neither one ever noticed it. They were reliving the past and couldn't see the present any more. I took a call one night from one of the old folks homes in town. The lady was going on and on about how she needed an ambulance, and when questioned for the address, gave an address a few towns over. She described the house to the T, along with the surrounding neighborhood. 911 gave the address as the nursing home, so I called over and had someone check on this woman and call me back. Sure enough, it was a woman in the dementia wing, describing the house old house she had lived in. Speaking of nursing homes, I have a few friends that are/have worked in them. They said, on quite a few separate occasions, that people who are close to death have started conversations with someone else in the room besides my friends, in speaking about "Oh, ok, I guess it's time to go then". Interesting stuff. Sam Kinison reportedly did the same thing when he passed on at the scene of a car accident. |

Okay, let's get this thread back on track.
Here's one for ya... Back in the '80's when I lived in Nashville, I "lived in sin" for a while with a woman who's last name was Bell. So I was fiddling around her dad's house one day and found a huge box of books - all the same book - called "The Bell Witch at Adams" (Adams, TN). So I asked him about it and was told about the family's rather unusual experiences with a haunting in the early 1800's. Here's the story: http://www.prairieghosts.com/b-cave.html There is no greater ghost story in the history of American than that of the Bell Witch of Tennessee. It would require an entirely separate book to chronicle the strange haunting that occurred in Robertson County between 1817 and 1821 (and I have written one –– see my book Season of the Witch for the complete account) but in short, the family of a local farmer named John Bell was plagued by a mysterious and violent spirit for nearly four years. The haunting involved spectral creatures, disembodied voices, unbelievable violence and even resulted in the death of John Bell ––- all at the hands of the infamous Bell Witch.
The haunting began in 1817 when the Bell family began experiencing strange phenomena in their home. First, the house was plagued with knocking and rapping noises and scratching sounds. Blankets were pulled from beds, family members were kicked and scratched and their hair pulled. Particularly tormented was young Elizabeth Bell, who was slapped, pinched, bruised and stuck with pins. At first, John Bell was determined to keep the events secret, but soon confided in a friend, who then formed an investigative committee. John Bell's friends soon learned that the strange force in the house had an eerie intelligence. It soon found a voice and from that day on was seldom silent. The spirit identified itself as the "witch" of Kate Batts, a neighbor of the Bell's, with whom John had experienced bad business dealings over some purchased slaves. "Kate" as the local people began calling the spirit, made daily appearances in the Bell home, wreaking havoc on everyone there. People all over the area of soon learned of the witch and she made appearances, in sounds and voices, all over Robertson County. The ghost became so famous that even General Andrew Jackson decided to visit. He too experienced the antics of the witch and his carriage wheels refused to turn until the witch decided to let them. John Bell fell victim to bouts of strange illness, for which Kate claimed responsibility. While he was sick in bed, the spirit cursed and prodded him, never allowing him to rest. One day, he went to bed and never recovered. He was found senseless in his bed one morning and a strange bottle was found nearby. Bell's breath smelled of the black liquid in the bottle, so a drop of it was placed on the tongue of a cat and the animal dropped dead. John Bell soon followed suit and Kate screamed in triumph. She even made her presence known at his funeral, laughing, cursing and singing as the poor man was buried. Kate didn't vanish immediately after the death of her proclaimed enemy, though. She stayed around, threatening Betsy Bell to not marry the man that she truly loved, Joshua Gardner. The witch would never say why, but she did allow the girl to later marry the local schoolteacher, Richard Powell. Kate soon left the family but promised to return in seven years. She did come back and plagued the family again for two weeks. She soon departed but many believe that she may not have gone far. Who was the Bell Witch? Was she really a ghost, who claimed to be connected to a living person? Or did the resentment and the hatred of the real Kate Batts create an entity of its own? Or could the haunting have been poltergeist activity linked to Betsy Bell? No one will ever know for sure –– but whoever, or whatever, the Bell Witch was, many believe that she has never left Adams, Tennessee at all. Near the Red River, on the former Bell farm, is a cave that has been called the "Bell Witch Cave". Thanks to local legend and lore, many people have come to believe that when the spirit of the witch departed from the torment of the Bell family, she went into this cave. Others (myself included) believe that the cave marks the entrance to a doorway through which Kate came into the world, departed, and perhaps even returns today. Who knows? But I can tell you that with the large number of bizarre incidents reported in and around the cave in modern times, notions of the witch returning may not be as odd as you might think. While the cave has become quite famous in recent years, there is little mention of it in contemporary accounts of the haunting. It is believed that the cave might have been used for the cool storage of food in those days, thanks to the fact that it remains a constant 56 degrees. It was also mentioned in some accounts that Kate’s voice was often heard nearby and one day, Betsy Bell and several of her friends had a close encounter with the witch inside of the cave. The cave itself is located in the center of a large bluff that overlooks the river. The mouth of the cave opens widely but entrance to the cavern itself must be gained through a fairly long tunnel. The cave is not large compared to most commercial caves; however its true length is unknown because of narrow passages that go beyond the 500 or so feet accessible to visitors. Although geologically, this is a dry cave that has been carved from limestone, in wet weather, a stream gushes from the mouth of the cavern and tumbles over a cliff into the river below. This makes the cave nearly impossible to navigate and even shouted conversations become inaudible over the roar of the water. In dry times, the cave has proven to be quite an attraction to curiosity-seekers and ghost hunters. Once you pass through the entrance passage, the visitor enters a large room that opens into yet another tunnel and an overhead passageway. Another large room can be found at the rear of the explored portion of the cave, but from that point on the tunnels become smaller, narrower and much more dangerous. The Bell Witch Cave became an attraction thanks largely to a man named Bill Eden, who owned the property for a number of years. Eden was a wealth of information about the cave and about the fact that strange occurrences were continuing to take place on the land that once belonged to John Bell. Although he was mainly a farmer, Eden did make some early improvements to the cave by adding electrical lights, but that was about all. Despite being undeveloped though, the cave managed to attract hundreds of visitors every year who wanted to be shown through it. Bill always obliged although was always puzzled about how they found the place. There were no signs to point the way at that time but somehow people tracked down directions to the site and they always asked to hear the stories of the witch, and the stories that Eden spun from his own weird experiences at the place. Many of the strange experiences actually happened to Bill Eden himself, while others involved visitors to the cave. For instance, a woman came to visit one day and asked to go down and see the cave. She had brought a group of friends along and in all, about fifteen people followed Eden down the rather treacherous path to the cave’s entrance. All at once, the woman in charge of the group abruptly sat down in the middle of the path. One of the people who was with her asked why she was sitting there, and she answered that she wasn’t! She claimed that a heavy weight, which felt like a ton of lead, was pressing her down to the ground and she couldn’t get up. Several members of the group managed to get the lady to her feet and half carried her back up the hill to her car. Bill Eden could also recount a number of encounters he had on his own in the cave. "You can hear footsteps in there all the time and I saw one thing," he once said in an interview. "Lots of people come out here expecting to see a ghost or a witch of whatever you want to call it. I just call it a spirit - and it looked like a person with its back turned to you. Looked like it was built out of real white-looking heavy fog or snow, or something real solid white. But you couldn’t see through it. It had the complete figure of a person till it got down to about its ankles. It wasn’t touching the floor at all. It was just drifting - bouncing along." As Eden mentioned, a lot of people came to the cave hoping to see, or experience, a ghost. While many of them went away disappointed, some got a little more than they bargained for. Eden had taken a group of young people into the cave one evening for a tour. They had been inside for about an hour and had stopped in the back room where they talked for awhile and Bill told of his experiences in the area. As they were starting to leave, one of the girls in the group started to make some remarks about the authenticity of the place, whether or not it was really haunted, and about how disappointed she was that nothing had appeared or had happened. She continued this monologue into the passage connecting the two rooms, which is quite narrow. Everyone else in the group seemed to be having a good time and Eden was used to the squeals, giggles and laughter that often accompanied young people on tours of the cave. The girl who was complaining was walking directly in front of Eden at this point. She was walking along and then all of the sudden, stumbled backwards as if she had been pushed. She took a couple of step back and then sat down hard on the floor of the cave. She insisted that someone had slapped her, even when Eden tried to convince her otherwise. Eden helped the girl to her feet, still skeptical, and they all moved to the front room of the cave. Once there, he shined his light on her face to see how badly she had been hurt. He looked at her cheek and was surprised to see a red welt - and the prints of fingers that were still visible where she had been struck! In the early summer of 1977, several soldiers from Fort Campbell, Kentucky came over to visit the cave. Eden took the young men on a tour and ended up in the back room, where all of them sat around talking and Eden told his stories of the odd events on the farm. One of the men politely expressed some doubts about the validity of the story. He had been to many places that were supposedly haunted and nothing out of the ordinary had ever occurred to him. Eden laughed and shrugged his shoulders. The man could believe whatever he wanted to, but as for Bill, well, he had seen enough things on the farm to know that something unexplainable was going on. "If something happened, you probably wouldn’t ever come back here again," Bill added with a grin. The group sat and talked for a short while longer and then they all got up to leave –– all except for the young man who had spoke up about his disbelief in ghosts. "Mr. Eden! Come here and help me," the soldier said. "I can’t get up." Eden and the man’s friends all assumed that he was joking and they all began to laugh. It wasn’t until Bill took a good look at the man that he realized that something really was wrong. The young man was now begging for help and his face was drenched so badly with sweat that it looked like someone had poured a bucket of water over him. When Eden took hold of his hand to help him up, he could feel the man’s hand was cold and clammy as if he were going into shock. The man continued to call for help and claimed that he could feel strong arms wrapped around his chest. They were squeezing him tightly, he said, and he was unable to breathe. Eden and the other men helped their friend to his feet and while the soldiers supported him, Bill wiped his face off with some run-off water from the cave. When the soldier got to feeling better, they took him outside of the cave. By the time they were ready to leave, the young man had completely recovered and was suffering no ill effects from his harrowing experience. As he was heading to his car, he stopped and shook Bill Eden’s hand. "Well, you were right about one thing, Mr. Eden," the young soldier said. "I won’t ever be back here again." The present-day owners of the Bell Witch Cave, and the piece of the old Bell farm made so famous by Bill Eden, are Chris and Walter Kirby. Walter is a tobacco farmer and Chris manages to stay busy managing the upkeep and offering tours of the cave. In the summer months, this task is more than a full-time job. The Kirbys purchased the land in April 1993. The place had been empty for several years, after the death of Bill Eden, but by that summer, the cave was open again for business. Over the course of the next year or so, they made a number of improvements to the cave, which included new lights, a new electrical system, an improved path to the cave, wooden walkways to cross the most treacherous areas of the trail, and a number of other things. These improvements continue today. It wasn’t long after the Kirbys moved to the farm, and began conducting tours in the cave, before they realized things were not quite right on the property. They began to notice first that there were strange noises that didn’t have an easy explanation. "We’ve heard them in the cave and we’ve heard them in the house," Chris has said on occasion. "I feel like if there’s anyplace that could be haunted, it’s this place here. First of all, it’s got the legend of being haunted. There’s an Indian burial mound right above the mouth of the cave on the bluff. And the previous owner of the cave died in our bedroom." One day, Chris and her dog were leading a tour of the cave for a group of visitors. She was just opening the steel gate that leads inside when she heard a strange sound - the same sort of sound described by Bill Eden and one of his tour groups years before. "It sounded like real raspy breathing sounds," she said, "like someone couldn’t get their breath. It only lasted for a minute and then it was gone." Chris looked back to her tour group, but they were quietly talking amongst themselves and hadn’t heard a thing. The tour continued through the first room, down the narrow passage and into the second room. Here, as is the tradition in Bell Witch Cave Tours, Chris began telling stories of the witch, the haunting and strange incidents on the farm. As she was talking, the dog suddenly reacted to something that no one else could see. The hair on the animal’s back stood up and she began showing her teeth and growling. The tour group asked what was wrong with the dog, but Chris had no idea. She was finally able to calm the dog down, but then the animal began whining and tucked her tail between her legs. She cowered back against Chris and at that same moment, the flashlight in Chris’ hand suddenly went out! "I guessed that it was just the battery at first," Chris remembered, "but then a lady’s video camera stopped working too. We were all standing there in the dark and I’ll tell you, I was ready to get out of there and everyone else was too!" Chris has also reported strange apparitions that have been seen in the cave by visitors and staff members alike. s Some of these shapes are misty and fog-like, sometimes appearing in different parts of the cave, only to vanish when approached. She also recalled another type of image they had seen. "It looked like heat waves that come up over the highway in the summer time," she explained. "You can see them out of the corner of your eye and then they’re gone." One of the ongoing traditions (or legends, if you will) of the Bell Witch Cave involves the removal of any sort of artifact from the premises, be it rocks or anything else found inside of the cave. Some believe that perhaps the energy of the area is imbedded in some way within the actual makeup of the place and by removing a portion of the cave, you are inviting the phenomena that occurs here to travel with you. Others are not so scientific –– they believe that the spirit of the witch will follow anyone who removes something from the cave! It’s likely that this tradition got started a number of years ago when the remains of a young Native American woman were discovered by men doing construction work on one of the local roads. Because it is well known that the former Bell farm contains a burial mound, it was requested that the bones of the Indian woman be entombed within the Bell Witch Cave. The remains were laid out in the first room of the cave in a shallow indention that was then lined with limestone slabs. Unfortunately, they did not remain there for long. A short time later, trespassers into the cave made off with the bones, but according to local lore –– not without a price! Gossip in the community has it that each of the persons who removed one of the relics suffered a series of misfortunes, accidents and injuries within days of the theft. For this reason, it has come to be believed that it is bad luck to remove anything at all from the cave. Over the last several years, I have received a number of accounts from people who claim to have taken away stones from the Bell Witch Cave, only to then experience not only bad luck, but strange happenings in their previous un-haunted homes! Chris Kirby has assured me that she has received a number of packages in the mail over the years that have contained rocks and stones that were removed from the cave. After getting them home, the folks who removed them began to suffer all sorts of problems and weird events. They believe that by mailing them back to the cave, they might alleviate their problems. Since the late 1970s, the Bell Witch Cave has a destination point for ghost hunters, curiosity seekers and paranormal enthusiasts. Strange phenomena has been reported on this property for centuries, dating all of the way back to the time of the Bell family in the late 1810s and 1820s. Weird events continue to this day and anyone with an interest in the supernatural is encouraged to make their way to the small town of Adams, Tennessee and seek out the Bell Witch Cave –– if you dare! And here's the "official website" of the cave owners (you can go see the place): http://www.bellwitchcave.com/ |

Well I dont know if it was a ghost suprenatural but I never believed until some stuff happened to me, here it goes for what its worth.
For a few nights I was woken up around 2 to 3 in the morning by knocking at the front door, a normal to quiet knock. I dismissed the knocks because of the people that lived around me. (drunks and marital issues everywhere, figured wrong door, kids, etc.) The knocks started to get louder in the following nights. I was not happy being woken up, so I started charging outside with my old stubby .38 in my pocket to find out who was screwing with me, and saw nothing. Then the knocks became even louder, tried to find out who, but never saw anyone. (even after running around corners of the place) The next night the knock was a booming pound, (like a cop) and I saw a shadow through the window so I jumped up (I was close to door, it was a studio apartment) ran outside. Now when I got outside the shadow had moved from the stoop (I had just looked through the peep-hole and saw the guy right before opening the door .5 a second) to the side of my door. (now I had a short fence at the side leading from walkway to the side with a hedge, so to get around it you would have to walk about ten to twelve feet to get around it) When I confronted the guy all I did was startle him, like he had no idea why I came out. I asked him "What do you want??" and followed with "Dont knock on my door." Well here is the wierd part, my wife inside (about 5ft away from me) never saw the guy, or heard his voice, and I when closing the door was struck with how big the guy was, I am 6ft tall and this guy was at least a foot and a half taller than me, and I was standing on my stoop another foot higher than where he would have been standing. Now inside, I am thinking how weirdly big this guy was and my wife starts asking questions about him / what happened, and I cant even recall if he was white or black, or even what type of clothes he had on, no description besides his size. (I dont even rember what his voice sounded like, keep in mind this is all just minutes later) That was mostly it, no more knocks, (my lease was up about a week later ,so, I left to a nicer place anyway) I am just left with a what happened that night. (Supernatural, or what) I have had other things happen, but this was the first thing that I couldnt explain, and before that I have never had anything remotely supernatural happen. BTW this all happened in Brandon FL and believe it or not it is my story take it for what its worth. |
|
Yea I do rember what he said just an "oh...sorry" (no voice or dialect recolection, rember the words not the voice) and I was fully alert. When I was woken up, I looked out at the shadow in the window then picked up my .38 (still looking at the shadow) then opened the door. (after briefly looking through the peep-hole). All this sounds like alot but in real time mabye 3 to 5 seconds had passed between knock and the door opening.
I have no idea what that was in my other post. Stuff has happened after that, but the other things are more apparant, one way or another. My grandmother passed away shortly after the apartment incident and was terrified of the "black" men coming to get her. She was in the later stages of cancer and slipping. (still in my parents house to be with family before passing) Well her being terrified of these "black men" was what I thought was a sign of her ming slipping at the end, I'll be danmed though if I didnt see a black shadow to the side of her standing, (the day before she went, she passed that night) and the door closed (quickly a slam) as I stood in the hall thinking about what I was looking at. Well before she passed she became lucid for her last hours and asked if I saw him, I told her "I dont know" and had a conversation with her before the end. What else is interesting is that I have been around many people near death, about to pass and they claim to see similar things as well. Anyone else heard of anything else like this? Also I have seen / heard some wierd things in the swamp. (Green swamp, the Glades, and the Okefenokee Swamp, other swampy wooded areas as well) |

Do you remember if the guy said anything to you? I'm guessing you were half asleep? Weird things do happen when one is half-asleep. Once, in the middle of the night, the phone began ringing. I woke up from a deep sleep, reached over the girlfriend and pulled a tissue out of the Kleenex box, held it up to my ear, and said "Hello?" #1.) Did the girlfriend hear the knocks that specific night? Or just wake up upon the poster getting out of bed to follow the poster to the door? On with the stories: An honest policeman, while my family and I were visiting his family at his house, told us of a time when he finally came to believe in something more. His family must have known the story, but he decided to tell us as well. Sometime during a night shift he stopped a car on the highway for some regular offense. As he got close to the driver's door he stated that it was as if an invisible hand was placed on his shoulder from behind, and that he stopped his approach upon getting the feeling. Then, for whatever reason he could see through the metal of the driver's door. He could see the small, fully automatic weapon (I am not sure if he meant a TEC 9 style or an Uzi) through the door and in the driver's hands. At this point the officer drew his weapon and demanded the driver show him his. The officer credits this event as saving his life, as the perp did have a load of more illegal arms in the trunk of the car (he was running fully-auto and stolen weapons to somewhere). The perp simply could not understand how the officer knew, and kept asking as long as he was in that jurisdiction's care that night. The perp was never told. As this officer told us, it was apparent he was being honest and humble, and just trying to communicate that this event happened. Beyond that he let us draw out own conclusions (as it was apparent he really couldn't come to a full conclusion himself - who could?). Added to my own experiences, which I will not list here (nor anywhere), I have a tough time being a pure atheist - even if a true 'God' does not exist. |

Dude, Known you all this time and didn't know that you knew about Black Shuk!!! VERY COOL!!!! Black Shuk is the reason that I, presonally, will only own large, shaggy black dogs. Of course, the kids have the Fr00t Dog....but that isn't mine. In Central and South America there is a Spectral Dog known as the "Caldejo" in, at least, Guatemala. Interesting, the Caldejo can be large and black OR large and WHITE. In either instance, they are considered ( this ring a bell? ) "the Devil's Hounds" and are portents of doom and collectors of souls, particularly of evil men. |

I have only posted my happenings here because I am unknown here. Anyone that knows me wouldnt believe I would admit to anything like what I have passed along here.
What I have seen happen has happened (in my mind it is clear anyway.....that something I cant explain, or reason with, so I let it be) and it is nice to talk about it. BTW I would never "seek out" anything paranormal and things beyond a bump in the night are hard for me to deal with. (I can also admit I am afraid of elements of the unknown, as a Christian, I fear deamons. If I am correct that I have seen people or whatever in the shadows then something evil could trulely exist that I want nothing to do with. It scares me, all this goes aginst my being and how I am.) #1.) Did the girlfriend hear the knocks that specific night? Or just wake up upon the poster getting out of bed to follow the poster to the door?
Yes my wife woke up and she was scared, it was a studio apartment so the bed was right at the door. (280sq ft) |

At my cousin's cottage in northern Michigan, my older brother (who was about 2 or 3 at the time) would play with his imaginary friend by himself in a room upstairs. My parents heard him talking to someone and every time they asked him who he was talking to, he'd say he was playing with the boy from over the hill. They didn't know of any hill around and obviously he was alone, so they just passed it off as his imagination.
This went on for a few days, and eventually my aunt, uncle and parents went on a walk to explore the area as it is heavily wooded and there are a lot of trails, especially around the lake that the cottage is on. They walked around for a while and after climbing a steep hill came upon an old family cemetery (not our family) and were looking around the grave stones. Sure as shit among them was the grave of a small boy who died around the turn of the century and would have been about my brothers age. When they got back to the cottage, they asked my brother what his friend's name was and he said Joshua, the same name that was on the grave stone over the hill. My brother has no memory of any of this and doesn't remember ever playing upstairs there. A few years ago when my cousin was around the same age, she too was heard talking to someone when she was playing by herself upstairs. My mom got a call late at night from her sister, saying that her daughter too was now playing with a boy from over the hill in her room. His name is Joshua. She is 16 now and also has no memory of ever playing with anyone at the cottage. |

Interesting. Like you say, there are not too many guys who are that tall. Unusual, to say the least. What else is interesting is that I have been around many people near death, about to pass and they claim to see similar things as well. Anyone else heard of anything else like this? The only thing I can think of that's been sort of strange that I couldn't figure out a logical explanation for was the time back in '86 when a friend of mine got a bug up his butt to go around setting things right with various people he'd had problems with over the years. Not long after doing this, he was killed in a car wreck. There was another guy in the car with him when it happened, who lived. From what he said, Andre was wearing his seatbelt, but the car flipped and landed on the section of roof over the drivers seat, which of course killed him instantly. Certainly could have been coincidence, but then again, who knows? Just something to think about. |

My brother has no memory of any of this and doesn't remember ever playing upstairs there. ... She is 16 now and also has no memory of ever playing with anyone at the cottage. Alzheimer's runs deep in your family. No, just joking. The 'don't remember' part is interesting to me because I've had some people, like my mum and step-dad (who just died, R.I.P.), tell me of some pretty incredible things that happened to them, but then, years later, seem to have forgotten about the event, totally, until I remind them of it by bringing it up. There is a defensive mechanism, or a way of dealing with the world, that humans have that is an active filter (one that I believe actually takes a bit of mental energy, though those doing it (and a lot of us, if not all of us, do it) are never aware of it) for events that don't fit into the norm. This is 'suppression.' Some people show symptoms of the build-up of stress and expended energy, over time, in quirky (or, worse, dangerous) behaviors. I guess this is the subconscious stating it is tired? As for the people near death who might see things, my dad claims to have seen both his father and his mother begin to converse to someone who wasn't there within a few days before each of their deaths. On the other hand, while I wasn't around for days in advance, as a prior professional EMT I can't say I saw anything miraculous in those people who died in front of me. But that may not be a fair observation as, again, by that time they could have already come to peace with whatever, or whomever, they needed to. I was not there for days beforehand. |
| My neighbor on the farm across the street is in her late 70's and has lived most of her life there with her husband until he died last December. She claims he still comes home and gets into bed with her every night and leaves early in the morning like he always did. |

So a couple years back I was riding the school bus home. I remember reading about an archeological dig somewhere in Europe a couple of years ago where they found a sacrificed dog near one of the foundation posts. All bets placed on that being a black dog.
